Main provisions of FDA tobacco legislation AP source.

Creates a tobacco control center within the FDA and gives the FDA authority to regulate the content, marketing and sale of tobacco products to protect public health.

I was under the impression that the marketing of tobbaco was already heavily regulated.

Allows the FDA to change tobacco product content to protect the public health.

Is this not an oxymoron of sorts. How do you make tobbaco safe for the public? All of us even those who use tobacco products are well aware that there are safety risks.

Bans the use of flavors, including candies and fruit flavors, in tobacco products.

How is this supposed to help anyone? The flavors are there for people who like them. I do wonder if this will go so far as to eliminate menthol. I for one like the smell of some pipe tobaccos.

Aims to prevent sales to minor by requiring direct, face-to-face transactions between retailer and consumers. Limits advertising that could attract young smokers.

Looks like there will be no more cigarette machines. Last time I checked the advertising was already heavily regulated. Ads targeting minors are already illegal.

Bars the use of expressions such as "light, "mild" or "low" that give the impression that a tobacco product poses less of a health risk.

Though I agree that the "light" labels are misleading, I do not feel that this will reduce health risks. Once again isn't it an oxymoron to make tobacco safer?

Establishes user fees on tobacco companies to pay for the new regulations.

I really shouldn't have to point out that all this equates to is an increase in end consumer cost.

All of this regulating and changing of ingredients and labeling not to mention the new fees placed on the companies are only going to cause the cost of tobacco to rise exponentially. This should not be allowed. How many things are they going to regulate before there is nothing left to regulate?

sad , isnt it , people yet again epic fail to use logic ,
its not tobaco thats killing you , its what they put into the tobaco.

you have a choise to go to a place where people smoke
you have a choise not to go to a place where people smoke

the non smoking ban in EUeurope is based on " employer - worker health issues"

not " customer (ie you/someonelse) - customer health issues at someone elses place where you have come to by your own consent)

not even customer - establishment owner health issues.

!
