Why not use the trees as they are mixed with some of our tech to help the situation. This will cause an "unforseable " thing to occur which could make the situation worse...

We never learn.

I wonder what the real reason is?

There is no conspiracy here. The Corps is a bureaucracy. As with any bureaucracy, if a proposal, no matter how strange, makes it through the process, with sufficient endorsements at each level, said proposal becomes policy and is enforced. The glacier of officialdom then begins to move, without sight or sense, but with the full faith and power of the system behind it.

It is the same when a patch of ground that only sees water when the rain falls is declared a 'wetland' by the same Corps, and it must be treated as such.

There is rarely enough active thought in the bureaucracy focused at a given subject to work up a good conspiracy.

Nothing to get worked up about, no conspiracy, just good common sense.
These are levees, man made contructions, and levees have to be maintained, if they are to do their job, keep the water on the other side.
If the levees are covered in vegitation then there is no way to acurately check the condition of the levee.

All it takes to breach a levee is one squirel or musk rat burrow.
I speak from experience, I worked on a emergency flood response crew when I was younger, and have seen flooding on an epic scale.
I have had to cut out the trees on a levee so the heavy equipment could get in to repair the breach.

If the levee is covered with trees you have to chop all them out and remove the the roots to properly fix the levee.

Besides if the levee wasnt there then there wouldnt be any trees or people to complain .

Thanks for the input, I wasn't implying there was a conspiracy, but it was clear there was some debate about to chop or not to chop and I love to pick brains

Well, seeing as the Corps of Engineers is held responsible for the levee system, I say do as they wish. I'd trust engineers over environmentalists anyday anyways.

Absolutely rediculous. Unwarranted destruction of the environment. I can't believe they are going to chop down 100,000 miles of trees for this. They obviously have nothing better to do and don't give a crap about spoiling the environment.

Trees are a crop! Cut them down and maybe save hundreds of lives.

Look what happened with Katrina - the flood walls failed and people died. The rest of the damage was caused by a bunch of bunny huggers who think that weeds, trees, rodents and insects living in/on a floodwall or levee is natural. The environmentalist, trust-fund-baby, whiners are the problem!
