I would imagine they travel using the same mechanism planets do only they control their direction through an advanced electromagnetic propulsion system. The navigational component of the propulsion system could get off track if the Earth's magnetic fields were slightly skewed. This would explain the 'accidents' you may have heard about. The Air Force and or Delta Force are usually first to a UFO accident scene from what I understand though with the foreign operated Dept. of Homeless Security, who knows? Displaying the subduction zones and oceanic ridges via satellite gives one a clear picture of how California is slowly merging closer to Japan in the East while New York is slowly receding westward from Europe.
