RANKIN INLET, Nunavut - Canada's governor general ate a slaughtered seal's raw heart in a show of support to the country's seal hunters, a display that a European Union spokeswoman on Tuesday called "too bizarre to acknowledge."
Over the past five years, the International Fund for Animal Welfare has submitted video evidence of more than 660 violations of the Marine Mammal Regulations - including the dragging of conscious seal pups across the ice with sharpened boat hooks, the stockpiling of dead and dying animals, beating and stomping seals, and skinning seals alive - to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. To date, not a single charge has been laid in response.
