It's all about China and it appears China is losing confidence in Kim.

I say let China handle the situation and they will be seen as heroes and peacemakers. This is their chance to make friends and lose the dead weight of NK.

The question that has been overlooked in the thread thus far is Kim's mental condition. May I remind you all he's had a stroke (brain damage) and we do not know the extent this is affecting his judgement or policies.

China step up! Make friends show the world you are a good neighbor and put this rabid mutt down!

Could these meetings bring us some good news about the situation?
I certainly will be thinking positively for sure when this is taking place.

ASEAN summit. 1-2 June

South Korea will Monday host one of its biggest-ever diplomatic gatherings, overshadowed by the growing security threat from North Korea. Seoul planned the ASEAN-Korea Commemorative Summit to promote its "New Asia Initiative" to strengthen its ties with the continent.

Hopefully something good good comes out of those meetings and this get can get put on the back burner for a few years.

However, if I am a desperate dictator and want the worlds' attention and maybe to lure SK into a fight, this may provide an opportunity to reek havoc.

yup I agree same source.

Regardless of Pyongyang's intention, if Washington and Beijing really cannot tolerate a nuclear North Korea, the United States must offer a path forward, and China must push North Korea from behind.

Hello my friends - sorry that my busy weekend is denying my possibility to Op this thread better... Thanks from quality postings in here!

Some "News Update" from MSM: (Tougher? - Military option!)

U.S., allies prepare for tougher response to N.Korea

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The United States and its Asian allies could look at tougher responses should diplomacy fail to get North Korea to abandon its nuclear program, officials at a security conference said at the weekend.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates told his counterparts from South Korea and Japan on Saturday that while diplomacy was preferred, other steps may be considered if it failed.

"Six party talks are the preferred course of diplomacy," Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said, referring to the now defunct talks among the two Koreas, China, Russia, Japan and the United States to disarm the North.

- Disarm NK? - That will be much more easy to say than do...

Talking business over arms in asia.

Asians talk of peace and haggle over arms

The annual Asia Security Conference, a forum for discussion, brought together some of the world's main arms-makers with military chiefs nervously eying their neighbours' moves and looking to upgrade defences in a region full of long-running insurgencies, potential maritime disputes and growing wealth.

If North Korea did have a nuke or 2 and drop them.
What would the deaths be compared to what the west has caused under the done for the good banner?
The total if NK did would be smaller in comparison to the deaths caused by the west over the past 10 years, many more over 20,30 and more years.

With leaders of past like Saddam and now with NKs you know how they are and what they are likely to do.
We do it with bull#,lies and yes propaganda.Who would you say has a more evil and twisted way of doing things?
Im sure you know my answer to that one.

It beggers belief the view of some (Not directing this at you hab) that its alright if spread out over years but not in one go.Well not unless we in the west do it.
As could to NK.

Its called build up.
Diplomats are busy doing what they are supposed to do in the talking arena.
And while that is occuring, each side are preparing there stratagies for conflict if there is failier to resolve by diplomatic means.

wtf is wrong with u US ppl?

NK's tests is a "international" security threat eh?
your country is the biggest international threat ok?

forgive my straightforwardness but, wtf is ur biz in asia?
wtf r u doing in SK?

you proved to be useful in WW2, you kinda saved the world back then, but after which, u been invading, torturing, etc...

and now, you want to be the only fat kid in town holding the atomic gun, and u're using all excuses to make the world believe u r the only one who have the right to hold that gun.

quit all these "security threats" excuses, why cant NK make nukes? whats the difference btwn u n NK making nukes? dont talk about bad history, that is very debatable.

u invade weaker nations with lame excuses and huge ambitions, and now, wtf r u doing? go NK with your army of torturers, go! if not shut up

thank you for reading.

I have a question for you. Do you believe that countries have the right to enter into military agreements with other countries?

While your overall view actually is quite innocent the way you presented it made me laugh. Please consult history books or have some knowledge of basic facts on the subject matter at hand before you toss out the party line "oh no america is the big bad country".

America is in SK due to the Korean War (which anyway you wrap it up was not started by the US) and remains there to this day in the event of trouble again (albeit with a considerably small force) due to the constant threats made by NK against SK.

In addition to this i hardly think America wants to be as you so aptly put it "the only fat kid in town holding the atomic gun" nor could be. Any basic knowledge on this would immediately point you to the fact that both China dnd Russia are in posseseion of nuclear warheads as well as the other UN permanent members.

Finally while your comments on torture held some, although exaggerated truth, in that America has shamefully tortured and regrets it (like every country) let me remind you that if you lived in NK and had you expressed that obvious hate towards America against North Korea you would be promptly charged, given no trial and executed (maybe with some torture added in for irony).

Your igornance amuses me.

p.s - try spelling properly, it would have helped reduce the comical nature of your headless-chicken like rant.

It took all us my brother all of us. Russia did the heavy lifting but without a western front they would have fallen. Without the US manufacturing and Atomic capabilities it could have gone either way and my guess is that without the US Facism would have prevailed.

What kind of history books did you and Leo learn from?
I suggest you try reading up on WW2 from sources outside of the US.
You will get the true account.

By the way Im from a little (But sure can kick arse) place that did have a more than major part in WW2.
Great Britian also known as the UK.
Not mentioned in your history books then,I take it ???

Russia or Britain? Possibly the French resistance? Oh and i seem to remember the Americans joining at the very last minute.... them aswell.

Oh you're being specific. I misread it.

In that case, Russia,, Uk, most of europe, most of asia, Australia (never forget the Ozzies) and multiple other countries... including the USA.

Now that is the single most powerful post i've seen on ATS in a long while. Just as i was about to debate with you.... Truly i mean it. You've spoken truth. Only the corrupt want war.

Who ever we are. Wherever we've come from.... i guess 90% of us all will agree we want peace. Unfortunately the dog eat dog promotes the 10%.;

BUt again..... great post.

It's time for us to stand up against the tiny few.
