Giant blob found deep beneath Nevada

Perhaps repeated nuke tests would cause such a phenomenon? I just like making conspiracy out of everything.

I'm no expert, but the Nature article linked in my OP states:

Our numerical experiments suggest that the drip can be generated by gravitational instability resulting from a density anomaly of as little as 1% and a localized temperature increase of 10%.

It is my understanding that subduction of plate material followed by melting of said material in the mantle causes lighter compounds and gases to return to the surface via fissures causing volcanos, eg., the Ring of Fire.
