From a recent thread I put up there here: UN condemns North Korean nuclear test
There are two paragraphs of interest...

South Korea, which previously stayed out of the U.S.-led Proliferation Security Initiative in order to pursue reconciliation efforts with North Korea, set aside its reservations and announced it would join the pact immediately. The program involves stopping and searching ships suspected of carrying nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, materials to make them, or missiles to deliver them.

North Korea previously has warned the South that its joining the program would be considered an act of war.

This is bad, very very bad.

I've been saying all along......watch North Korea, watch North Korea, but everyone says it's "saber rattling" we'll see how loudly the nuclear saber's of North Korea rattle soon, I fear.

North Korea and South Korea are still technically at war, no peace treaty was ever signed.

I think NK is whining for attention from a new administration in the U.S.

I may be wrong, but that's the impression I'm getting.

You know, I would usually be the first to declare BS and chalk it all up to North Korean "Arm Flailing" as I like to call it.

However, there seems to be more to this one than the ones before. NK usually will only threaten war if somebody imposes sanctions or tries to take something from them.

This time, the simple act of joining a UN committee is considered an act of war. I think Kim has lost it for the last time.

Perhaps he wants to go out with a bang.

From the same article:

SEOUL, South Korea – The United Nations swiftly condemned North Korea for its test of a powerful nuclear bomb, and South Korea announced Tuesday it would join a U.S.-led initiative to intercept ships suspected of spreading weapons of mass destruction.

Russian officials said the nuclear bomb that the North detonated underground Monday was comparable to those that obliterated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, raising fears that the communist country could spread such technology abroad.

You have to wonder if they had enough to make a Big Boy sized bomb, they must have a lot more.

Perhaps but this is the SECOND test they have done. This is not a brand new thing. I suspect that if the first one did not trigger some kind of war this one wont either.

I imagine there will just be more pointless sanctions placed on N.K who obviously does not care about them as they keep going despite them.

That is how it has been going for years. N.K pulls a stunt and they get sanctions, then they pull another and they get more sanctions....

You know I wonder if those rumours of Kim having a heart attack or something last year were true. Maybe he wants to start off a war before it's too late for him to see it. I mean why spend years training up an army and never use it? He spent more on his armed forces than helping his own people, if he didn't do anything they'd probably freak out.... then again they ARE VERY loyal to him I suppose.....

I dunno

They've had working nuclear bombs for 4 years now, and they're worried about them spreading nuclear materials now?

This is more saber rattling.

If NK uses a nuclear bomb on an allied country, the war that breaks out it will be over before you read the first headline.

Your right, but now they have taken the knowledge they gained from the first test and applied it to this last one, more then likely gaining progress and ensuring that they possess a fully functioning nuclear weapon(s) and I believe they would be the next to use the weapon in anger, watch, obviously I hope I'm wrong but I fear I'm right.

This is exactly how I feel and I believe he would see the nuclear destruction of Seoul (and his people) as just that, a blaze of glory. I wonder if "juche" includes self destruction?

The important phrase involves the stopping and searching ships suspected of carrying nuclear materials, if South Korea or anyone stops, search and strips a NK boat of its sensitive material, sh!t will hit the fan...

Now it really looks like Powell and Biden knew something might go down shortly after Obama took office.

This is from Reuters on the subject:

Analysts said the North opted for a nuclear test sooner than expected to draw the attention of the Obama administration and to raise the stakes for potential direct negotiations. It also sought to strengthen the power base of leader Kim Jong-il to lay the ground for succession, they said.

*Snip*

"North Korea can only be hawkish this time, because time's running out for Kim Jong-il," said Jang Cheol-hyeon, an expert at the Institute for National Security Strategy in Seoul and a former official at the Workers Party of North Korea.

Kim wants to seal a deal with the United States quickly and seek a swift and sharp improvement in the country's economy before he can publicly anoint one of his sons to succeed him, Jang said.

Reuters

More speculation but good discussion matter.

I hope this is just Tentickles extrapolating a conclusion ?

If it were any more then next week we could all be breathing radioactive dust.

The South Korean Premier who promoted reconciliation with NK committed suicide last week.

Funny parallel in history that Neville Chamberlain died a broken man of cancer in 1940 after the invasion of Poland.

"Peace in Our Time."

Just gave the Nazis more time to prepare for their mad war.

IMO, any country that uses a nuke on another country better first make sure there will not be global nuclear retaliation. A tiny country like North Korea burping what few nukes it has could quickly and easily be removed from the map by the rest of the world.

I am ignoring the little pollution factor involved in mushrooming an entire country just because that is an entirely different thread issue, but a big one.

Krazy Kim isn't going to do anything except get his panties in a bunch because nobody is taking him seriously, again.

More of me trying to get a discussion going on whether they will take any military action against the South for their entrance into the UN Council.

I think some of you miss the point ?
NK does not need to nuke South Korea. If it has nukes able to reach Los Angeles and Tokyo then it can roll tanks across the borders in a conventional war and the west is impotent to stop this unless the West is willing to risk it's own populations.

I have a feeling if a South Korean vessel does indeed stop and search a North Korean vessel, there will be war. Seoul would be utterly destroyed and the North would advance and attempt to capture all the land they can.

Any attempt of a counter attack by the US IMO would be met with a nuke tipped missile, I also feel that as soon as a counter attack did indeed happen, China and the US would agree to some sort of truce, just like we have now.

Just hopefully the North isn't able to conquer the entire peninsula.

*edit to add* they don't need a nuke to destroy Seoul, there 3 million artillery guns would do the job in minutes.

I do wonder if the Cold war has just restarted ?

If a war was triggered and South Korea was attacked then if USA stepped in do any of you imagine Russia and China not taking sides ?
