Pakistan Claims More Gains Against Taliban

www.nytimes.com

KHAWAZAKHELA, Pakistan — A top Pakistani general said Friday that the military had succeeded in clearing two militant strongholds in upper parts of the contested Swat Valley, including this city, and was just a week away from taking over a third.

“Essentially, at this point in time, we are looking at eliminating the hard-core militants,” Maj. Gen. Sajjad Ghani, the commanding officer of the military operation in the upper part of Swat, said in a briefing for journalists here. Khawazakhela is one of the largest cities in Swat, with a population estimated at more than 500,000.

Ok for those of you who have been following the updates I've been posting here we go. The Pakistani contrary to popular opinion have been doing better than expected IMO. They have been able to clear out the Taliban in the areas they wanted to. No matter who or what kind of spin people will try to put on this. I say good show!

It goes on to state.

“The commandos have already landed on the mountain peaks and ridges” around Peochar, he said. “The militants are surrounded and encircled from all sides.” General Ghani said residents could begin to return to Khawazakhela and Matta in 15 days.

Perhaps its a misconception on my part but doesn't it seem that we are hearing , and have herd , more about Pakistan's battles against the Taliban then we have herd about
" our " battle against the Taliban in Afghanistan ?

Well

My view on that is unless something really bad happens you wont hear much about the US in Afghanistan. Which seems to be most of the time. It is only when there is bad news that it becomes news worthy and all the "America is loosing" crowd come crawling out of the woodwork.

Seems rather strange , don't you think ? If in fact that is the case , that we don't hear about U.S action in Afghanistan in less its " bad " , is something to be said in and of its self .

IMHO we don't hear jack that they don't want us to hear and I am highly suspicious of this whole mater in Pakistan , as I am guessing you just might be as well .

IMHO we will soon see " something " happen in Pakistan that will show the true nature of the matter taking place there now .

I could be wrong on this one but ...
We have been hearing over the last 2 or 3 years , as so reported , that Pakistan has a region to there north that there government doesn't " control " .
Would I be correct in saying that the region in Afghanistan that the " coalition " doesn't control is far larger then any region of Pakistan that is not under government " control "

I dont know do you have any links or information regarding whether that is true?
I'd be very inerested in seeing anything you could find that shows the extent of the terrritory controlled by the Taliban in Afganistan

Here's something that I just found , its from 07 and I will look some more tomorrow ...

Taliban control half of Afghanistan, says report www.telegraph.co.uk...

" The 110-page report said that its "exclusive" research found the Taliban controlled 54 per cent of Afghanistan. "
