It's real. Google Image Search: moon mars occultation

moon Jupiter occultation & moon saturn occultation are nice searches as well.

this is what it looks like...

that's the full article: www.space.com...

So is this: www.skyandtelescope.com...

And this: www.space.com...

and this: blogs.discovermagazine.com...

and this: solarsystem.nasa.gov...

All 100% real.

yeah it's 100% fake. any planet as viewed from earth or moon would be just a bit larger than the dots we see as stars and of slightly different color.

most people don't care much about what's going on beyond their grocery store and work so they'll swallow anything that sounds like a scientific truth especially if there are nice pictures attached

actually that photo was taken by Andy Chaiken on July 17, 2003.

It always amazes me how people will swallow outlandish *ahem* crap like this, but anything that someone can accurately describe, using real science, is greeted with, "are you off your meds?" How can people end up so stupid?

the picture you're linking to is genuine. the one i was commenting on is computer enhanced to make mars look somewhat bigger and clearer. it's almost double the real size.

Keep in mind Mr Chaiken is somewaht of an astronomer, so I'll go with enhanced but not in the way of making it false or whatever. I'm betting he has the equipment/cameras to make the picture better as you see it in that pic versus the original. If you look closely, you will see the craters in the foreground do match up. In short, enhanced - yes but photoshopped - no.

No, it is not almost double the real size. Mars is the same size in both pictures. If you take the picture you think is genuine and resize it so the Moon features match in size you will find that Mars is the same size as in what you think is the fake picture.

As for the reason one image is more detailed; image stacking.

Maybe the person that started the email believes in the principles of collective will manifestations.
They probably thought that if they got enough people to believe that mars would reach closer to earth, it would happen because of the collective belief of the human species.

P.S If the moon is able to look bigger as it passes the horizon on earth, is it not possible that the same thing can happen to the light from mars as it passes the gravity of the moon? Given our woefully inadequate assessments of the actual gravity of the moon (ie. hitting gravitational equilibrium between earth and moon earlier than expected during lunar missions), isn't it more plausible that the moon's gravity is able to bend light, not unlike earth?

The appearence of the moon being large when on the horizon, is through refraction of light, when it passes through the Earths many layered atmosphere. The moon doesn't possess the same amount of these layers.
At any rate, I think one would have to be within the moons atmosphere (viewing Mars), to be able to test your theory.

Hey all, I just dislike e-mail hoaxes and wanted to pass this along in hopes of deterring false info from making it's way on the boards, pass this along if you will.

Actually, when you look into the matter you'll find that atmospheric refraction makes the Moon look smaller, flatter, and redder.

The illusion of the Moon and Sun appearing larger near the horizon is just that; an illusion. There is a wealth of information available on the 'Net about this.

LOL, I got that email like two weeks ago. I still have it in yahoo mail.

I don't understand the point of the hoax. Is this some sort of conspiracy?

I believe that many of these hoaxes are a warning sign that the government wants to smokescreen some real issuesso they roll out time -tested false misleading stories for foot draggers. The Tom Biscardi Bigfoot hoax in Georgia last year wasted how many peoples time? In MAN-HOURS that sort of hoax costs in the millions of dollars of absolutely wasted time for NO payoff.Smokescreen news stories are also used to discredit serious researchers and demean their efforts, reduce their support and credibility by tainting the public arena with frauds, like poisoning the well water. There are People, animals and fossils on Mars.
Once you see ONE clear example of life on Mars, you'll be changed, and may find a few more,or hundreds,or thousands or think about billions of years of Mars evolution. One clear image will make you a believer.
