Mars Hoax Circulates: 'Big as the Moon!'

news.yahoo.com

Once again it appears that a Mars hoax that has widely circulated through the Internet since its first appearance during the summer of 2004 has begun to circulate yet again. It comes in the form of an e-mail message titled "Mars Spectacular," which originated from an unknown source.

In turn, this message has gotten passed on to others who couldn't resist forwarding it to their entire address book.

The e-mail declares that on the night of Aug. 27, the planet Mars will come closer to Earth than it has in the past 60,000 years, thereby offering spectacular views of the Red Planet.

Just a heads up all, I came across this and wanted to pass it along so that nobody recieving this e-mail would freak out thinking that this would really happen. I will pass this along to my address book and I suggest you all do the same, nobody likes e-mail hoaxes
Typicaly I get some of them but as it pertains to the topics we discuss here I thought I'd share this in hopes to preclude any false threads titled along the lines of "OMG Mars will appear as big as the moon"!!!! and such, again just passsing this along.

I remember when this first circulated.... it said something like "Mars 25 arc-seconds wide!" Oh nooooooooooooos! That's too muuuch!

Of course, you realize this is all just a way of covering up the approach of Nibiru

got this at work yesterday,

Snopes.com also has a reference about it.

Good idea to post it here and head it off before someone tries to make out its real.

I got this E-mail. Forwarded to me by my daughter, about one year ago.
I read it- and remembered thinking that it just didnt add up.
So what was the purpose behind this uninformative E-mail? I felt ripped-off, seeing that it was so out of date.
What was the purpose of the scam anyway?

I don't understand why somebody would start this hoax?
Why would you get peoples hopes up about something like that? Doesn't make sense.

It's like saying there'll be a solar eclipse on July 13th and then people get their hopes up but find out it isn't true. What's to gain? :S

There was probably some malicious virus attached to the E-mail.

I've never seen this kind of hoax before.

Mars got much closer to earth in 2003 and provided for some amazing photographs.

Here is an excellent photograph of the Moon-Mars occultation from 2003 (that actually occurred):

*Just last month people near and along the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada could see the Moon occult Venus.

Yeah. In agreeance with your statements on occultations, they do happen frequently. Occultantion= something hidden from view; which is where the term Occult is derived from.
I have no problem with this, just the fact that I recieved the E-mail 1) after the event, and 2)Its common for Mars to appear bigger at some point in it orbit than others, as apparent to the earths position.
By memory it claimed that mars hden't been as close for x-amount of years.....blah blah.
Only thing, the E-mail came after the event.

We've established that it was a hoax E-mail;mars getting closer to Earth is a real event, not sure if it was "closer" than usual at any point in the recent past or not.
Anyway, the real hoax (being the E-mail), I'd like to know what the purpose of that was

Does anyone know?

Which one is supposed to be Mars

Seen a moon that big (through atmospheric refraction), but never Mars!
Interesting photo editing though.

You sure it's not photoshopped?
Normally Mars doesn't look much larger than a average star.. Not even from the moon and during the closest approach the distance from Earth to Mars was 0.37 AU. Normally it's about 0.5 AU..

If I'm incorrect then please show me more pictures..

The closest Mars will come to earth in the near future is around January 27th, 2010. It'll be about .66 AUs away from Earth, still nowhere near the proximity of the moon (about .002 AUs).

yeah it's 100% fake. any planet as viewed from earth or moon would be just a bit larger than the dots we see as stars and of slightly different color.

most people don't care much about what's going on beyond their grocery store and work so they'll swallow anything that sounds like a scientific truth especially if there are nice pictures attached
