Well I guess cigarettes and whatever else they are going to use to rob American people will have to go black market soon.

I'm thinking, though, that so-called "sin taxes" are fairly appropriate if they go to the right place...like cigarette taxes into health care. Then again, you still can't get big Tobacco to pony up the social costs of their product.

Same goes for junk foods...using sugars, fats, salts and neuro-exciters like MSG and Aspartame, all cheap stuff, to make a gazillion dollars and leave it to the taxpayer to fund the eventual costs.

Somebody's gotta pay, Lucy...

Making a certain group of people carry unequal burdens is discrimination. What if it was a group of only short people targeted? Or bald? Or ugly? This is ridiculous to agree with! Those that disagree solely because they are targeted and those that agree because they are not are all missing the point. This is not agreeable because it is unfair and wrong. Stop thinking something is alright when it doesn't effect you, but not alright when it does. It's right and wrong, not better you than me. Stop being led around by the nose! You have a brain, use it?

Those calling for income tax increases need to educate themselves on how revenue is spent. Not one single dime of income tax is spent on anything but debt owed to The Federal Reserve. That massive sum of income tax money provides us nothing! It is solely used to repay the debt accumulated by all those costly decisions made in your honor, but against your will. The only good solution to this is spend less!! You know it is right when the only ones that disagree are those spending all of it. Tells you all you need to know.

Peace.

Who decides what the sin products are? If that is the thinking then I demand they put a 20 dollar tax on every porno magazine and porno video sold; imo these items perpetuate sex crimes against women and children. Of course I know that is left field but enough is enough. They are definitely going from push to shove now and one of these days I guess we'll have reached our breaking point, I don't know what happens then. I CAN'T BE HELD RESPONSIBLE.

[edit on 13-5-2009 by Bombeni]

We all know who decides what the sins are. THE GOVERNMENT funded research projects that are done with the outcome in mind.

What a great idea! But - as I see it - people have only been saying that - and voicing their frustrations - yet the reality is there has not been actions,

Yes, we had the "tea parties" that were spun as a Right Wing extremist action. Other than that - people here in the U.S. have sat back - and have done nothing - as everything is being taken.

I don't see these taxes resulting in protest - when people will take to the streets - is when it is too late to do anything about the situation.

When hyperinflation takes grip - from all the excessive printing of dollars - too late to stop the printing presses

When the market takes a huge dive again - and people had been suckered back into putting money into it and will be left with nothing - too late to take to streets over them being "fooled" into giving their money away.

When the govt. does take the pensions of people and gives it to the banks for more bailouts - people will probably voice their opposition - but it will do no good, just as it did no good in the past.

In other words - at what point WILL people (mass public) wake up and REALLY do something - That point will be TOO LATE to change the direction we are in right now!

I'll tell you what happened here...
One...Big Tobacco (Canada) started selling to wholesalers in the States, who resold to Native groups who smuggled them back in through reserves that straddled the border. Then you simply went to the stores that knew you and could sell you a tax-free carton for...I donno...2/3 the price. The taxes came back down.

Or what you can do now...go to a reservation and buy cheap smokes. They even have drive-throughs. Call it the revenge of the Indian.

The Indian smoke shops carry the same increase as all the other stores.

The government has already bankrupted America...

There is nothing left...

It is all gone...The bankers have it... ALL...

They do not care about us...

They are trying to start a REVOLUTION...They know we have had enough...
They just want a excuse to come in and wipe us all out now...

Then they get our land too...!!!

They will either keep pushing us till we snap...Then say it was ...OUR FAULT...

Or there will be another false flag attack soon...very soon...I would say before Christmas of this year...

It will all go to heck...

Tensions are way to high...People are mad as heck...

They know that...

I would say by this summer ...really...I don't think it will wait till Christmas...To be honest...

I feel a storm coming...

To be honest...I am just ready to ...GET IT OVER WITH...!!!

This is no joke, it's almost kind of comical when you think about it, but "common folk" are being painted into a corner and one of these days they are going to have their gut full of this heavy-handed government crapola.

I wonder what it will be called in the history books: The Sin Tax Revolt?

naw you are probably right, it will take one hell of a beating on the American people before they rise up. I think that people have so much to worry about these days that they feel that they have to do anything and everything they can to keep afloat, even if that requires them to work 3 jobs. They just cant see the point in trying to throw themselves under the bus to try n stop the train, instead they just keep runnin besides it.
It will take something of great importance to get the people to do something about the problem, until then, you are right, it will just continue until it is too late.

I couldn't agree more, when I saw that EVERY man, woman, and child is in debt for $30,000+ I was just shocked. I pay my bills, I live within my means, I have neglible credit cards, yet because I am responsible I, my spouse, and my children are in debt over $100,000 (for my family alone)?!
"They" did not ask me when they were passing various bills and spending, spending, and more spending. I'm certain if we the people had a say or a choice, the vast majority of citizens would have said that overspending far into the negative was not a financially responsible idea. Perhaps, the accounts of all those that got rich off of lobbiest, stealing my tax dollars, etc need to be frozen and confiscated. After all, isn't that what the FBI does to regular old citizens that commit a crime, is not what our Congress is doing a crime? How is it the national debt raises expontentially every year, yet all taxes are at an all time high and it's still rising?

I'm not sure that they do here. There are certain places the Great White Father doesn't stick his nose up here. Ontario smokers...can you help us out here?

And what I'm saying in general is that it is not necessarily unfair for those who knowingly stress the health care system through unhealthy lifestyle choices to pay a premium that is dedicated directly to alleviating some of that stress. Never mind that General Revenues crap.

Really, if you bumped a pack of smokes a nickel, and put that money straight to the cancer centres...that wouldn't be a bad thing. A nickel on a Big Mac to the Heart and Stroke Foundation? Same deal.

Truth is, dude, I'd have torched the legislature over a two bucks a pack increase, back in the day.

You are spot on, and yes, it is a crime. Taking peoples money without them giving you permission to takeit is stealing the last time that I checked? Isnt the money they used OUR money, since we are the ones that have to pay for it? So in essence, yes; they stole from us.

They should be behind bars, but they are above the law, hey get to do what they want, cause thats how they roll.

I know that's true. I was working at a mechanic shop when the gas started to go up. People driving less meant people weren't getting their cars fixed and at a job like that you only make what you fix. There simply wasn't enough work to make ends meet so I had to quit.

Well good for you, if you are so flush on money that you can spend 12 dollars on a pack of smokes then I know where I can get a loan.

To go after people who live a certain lifestyle over those whom live another is completely wrong.

Is it?

Why should someone how chooses not to smoke, drink or use oil have to pay for someone who chooses to do so?

There are some things we cannot choose, our race, our gender, our NEED for food and shelter. There are some things we can choose, our habits, our mode of transportation ect;

When I choose to smoke, I understand that I will pay more tax to do so.

The more you consume, the more tax you should pay. I would support a higer sales tax, for example, in lieu of an income tax, that way the more you consume, the more you pay.

It really irks me that the fact that I choose to live responsibily gives me absolutley no advantages.

By the way, my grandma is proud of me! I come from a long line of liberals! *grins good naturedly*

Are you for real?
Stop complaining? And get over it?

Yea, i can tell you arent American.
You see, here in the States, we like to fight for our privledges, because you know what, its our god damned right to.
We dont just sit by and let them do whatever the hell they want just because THEY think it is in the best interest of US. Hell if they had our best interests at heart than they would never have put us in the situation that we are in right now.
The only people that have our best interests at heart, are the people themselves, the people on this board who voice their frustrations to the rest because we all have a common enemy. We just dont let them run rampant on us, it is our duty to keep these bastards in check.
You have a lot to learn about Americans my friend.

I can not find the words to describe my disgust and my repulsion at what this country is becoming.

I watch the news, read up on ATS and other websites about the rampant greed that has overtaken officials elected to be our voice. They are not my voice. They are not the voice of many that post here.

I feel an anger rising that I have never felt before. I feel like the fog has lifted and my vision is clear.

I am at a loss for words to truly express myself.

As much as it saddens me, I hope that what I am feeling starts to appear in more and more people. Maybe then there will be actions taken to correct the wrongs.
