Ok folks...

There are a lot of people on ATS who are talking about a new type of internet with all the trappings of conspiracy theory.

However, these people have NOT done their research in the least bit. DD, I'm looking at you.

I'm not here to discuss whether or not there will be a new Internet...

What I am here to discuss is that IT IS NOT INTERNET2.

PLEASE for the LOVE OF CHRIST, stop calling it this. It makes you look like idiots...

WHY? Because Internet2 Already exists...

Internet2

It was formed in 1996. Here is an excerpt from their site...

nternet2 is formed as 34 university researchers gather in a Chicago area hotel on October 1, 1996 and commit to establishing a project to foster the development of networking capabilities that would not only support research and education, but would also eventually make their way into the global commercial Internet.

Ok... now rant away, but do yourselves a favor and start using the correct terminology!!!!

I call it the NWI or New World Internet!

It probably because most people got the internet after 1996 that you state. There has already been different jumps in net tech, as you look back at the evolution of the net. we can assume that it will not be like the way it is forever, as it will keep changing.

So you have to think like the people that are talking about such things. People need to also remember is that just becuase they have a plan to do something, does not mean they can do it.

We will see, like many things.

Anyone who've done research knows that...

But what should we call a more controlled internet? Internet 3 because internet 2 already exists?

Internet: Controlled?

Anyway, the EU wants to globalise internet...

Globalizing the internet

Putting under G12 control... and when you see the EU control of their internet... you wonder for how long internet will still be free. Hint: not long.

when politicians refer to a "new world order" they often just mean a re-ordering of the importance of the nations of the world. this doesn't stop people calling globalist elites the New World Order. this can be confusing but most people understand what is being referred to in context.

isn't this a similar situation? internet2 -vs- internet [part] 2?

I've been making my living in Internet tech since 1995. Internet2 is a common term which anyone who came up during that time knows.

It's the reason why Web 2.0 is called Web 2.0 instead of Internet 2.0 because there was already an Internet2.

Using the proper terminology will allow those of us who know what Internet2 is to better understand the concerns of those who use that term idiotically. Instead of making us all laugh our butts off.

Here is a link to all the current news articles referencing Internet2...

Google News

As you can see , it's ALIVE and WELL, but NOT what people are saying it is...

I dunno what term should be used... I just know calling it Internet2 is like calling the Akashic Records CNN.

so essentially you're saying you and your friends think it's quite funny that people use the term incorrectly?

"oh no, the computer nerds are laughing at me!!!! how can i go on?"

pull your head out, who cares if there's an actual internet2, that's not whats being referred to, obviously. if you can't tell the difference, you've got issues.

No, I'm saying that the ideas being talked about are interesting, but fail to draw any real interest from those of us who actually work in the Internet.

As you can see none of the news posts found via google news regarding Internet2 have anything to do with this.

I'm saying that those who are using the term are so IDIOTIC they can't even google.

That's what I'm saying

I agree with pieman. Just because people are refering to two different things using the same word doesn't mean they are wrong. Just look here

source: fullonforward.blogspot.com...

5. ENTERTAINMENT (en-ter-tayn-ment) n.
Female.... A good movie, concert, play or book.
Male...... Anything that can be done while drinking beer.

Maybe a bad example I know but sometimes when you're talking with computer guys and they know what the first "Internet2" or "Internet2.0" is then they probably know the difference between that and the "Internet2" found here on ATS... a conspiracy site. There's no reason to get anyone's panties in a bunch over the misuse of a word.

If I could find the family guy episode about bear arms I would
that's a good one.

There's no disinfo to it. Being the Internet2 you are talking about can be researched and known... it has nothing to do with people on here talking about a CONSPIRACY over something they refer to as "Internet2" because that is what it would be to them. They do not use the educational/research Internet2 you are talking about. Grow up and stop calling names just because you start a thread where you set yourself up.

i understand language needs to be precise when you get into programming and understanding computer systems. immersion in that world would probably lead anyone to be pedantic about computer speak, but the idea is the key in conspiracy, don't you think?

relax about it, consider a doctor, he doesn't ask you if you have "localised abdominal discomfort", he asks if you have a belly ache.

if the experts can't get past the specific terminology how can they be expected to get their heads around the nebulous concept.

and what i am saying is that either

a) if they found the idea interesting they shouldn't really care what people want to call the idea, the idea is interesting regardless of the terms it is couched in.

or

b)they would find the idea interesting but seeing as they are so hung up on the nitty gritty peculiarities of the subject which most people don't understand or care about, they probably wouldn't add anything interesting to the discussion anyway, so who cares.

You are right about what leads me to the pedantic nature of terms...

However if my head hurts I don't tell him I have a belly ache either.

i edited my last comment because i think i was actually fairly rude in the first place, sorry about that.

the thing is, it is only people in the industry since the mid 90's, as you pointed out earlier, that understand that there is a difference, not knowing about a fairly obscure network (? is it a network, dunno) doesn't make someone look like an idiot, that's unfair.

if you are involved in the industry, you should know that when a non-professional refers to "internet 2" they are using the common parlance rather than the professional term, the 2 represents "part two", as in the movie useage.

I too edited mine as well to another poster.

The thing is... we here at Above Top Secret are encouraged to search before posting. All I'm saying is that whoever coined this phrase obviously didn't.

I'd like to be able to discuss this with those in the Internet Community without sounding like a dingbat.

So I'm going to call it the NWI or New World Internet.

You aren't getting what I am saying there. Some will consider what you stated but those are beliefs, not proven facts. I'm done posting to your thread here no need to further a gutter conversation.

You might not see the gutter but you should find it because thats where your attitude is.I would say 95% of people would not know or care and we all know what each other is talking about anyway. If the elitists nerds dont like it tough.I would rather say internet2 than NWI.

sounds good to me, i hope it catches on. if i refer to the big scary new type monitored and charged internet, i'll use the term NWI aswell, i have to admit it has a better ring to it than "the big scary new type monitored and charged internet".

perhaps if you put a little explanation in your sig, it'll spread the word. telling people they sound like idiots almost never works, i've tried to tell my girlfriend loads of times, she always just get pi**ed.
