I have seen this before, and quite a bit of the time it is caused by how the software interprets the data that is reflected back to the unit. If it was a Doppler Radar then it is even more susceptible to this kind of return.

One thing is that the software has to be written to take into account many kinds of weather returns and it also has to filter out quite a lot of objects that are not weather related.
I could write pages on this but it would drive you to tears .
What you are seeing here is not that uncommon!

This happens from time to time, and shows up on ATS. I believe that it is caused when the radar is in Clear Air Mode, as opposed to Precipitation Mode. Here are some old threads about similar instances:

The person to ask though would be OzTheWeatherman, as I am sure he has access to that level of equipment and knows its quarks.

'Fraid I don't actually know what causes it ...... whether it's the radar itself or the software that processes the returns. It's just one of those things, like anaprop, that you see now and then.

The cause is an interference that come from Uetliberg's radar.

Well firstly I've seen this kind of effect on my local radar before.

Secondly, where are the witness reports of such a large UFO?

That was the first thing I thought too.
I have seen this on local news dopplers as well, and it appears to be a glitch with the equipment.

Can we say mountain out of molehill?

Well what is it? Mr Schacher claimed it was refracted precip, other claimed it was machine malfunction or anomalies. I dont know anything about weather radar, but if this is a somewhat common glitch in the system, why wasnt that stated very clearly at the beginning when this UFO story could've been avoided?

Its a radar, it swings in a circle, so when it screws up, it shows up as a circle. It can be several different things that make them do this, reflection from various things, or being set in the wrong mode. We have seen similar error circles like that, here on ATS, simply from the radar being in Clear Air Mode. They did come right out and say that it was a technical malfunction, and pulled the stuff from their site. Of course many UFO believers out there immediately think that anytime someone pulls something down its a cover-up. Generally is a no win situation for everyone, simply do to a mechanical error.
