Fluorescent puppy is world

www.newscientist.com

A cloned beagle named Ruppy – short for Ruby Puppy – is the world's first transgenic dog. She and four other beagles all produce a fluorescent protein that glows red under ultraviolet light.

A team led by Byeong-Chun Lee of Seoul National University in South Korea created the dogs by cloning fibroblast cells that express a red fluorescent gene produced by sea anemones.

Just when you thought you seen it all, we have fluorescent, glow in the dark puppies. What if I want my kid to glow?

Lee's team created Ruppy by first infecting dog fibroblast cells with a virus that inserted the fluorescent gene into a cell's nucleus. They then transferred the fibroblast's nucleus to another dog's egg cell, with its nucleus removed. After a few hours dividing in a Petri dish, researchers implanted the cloned embryo into a surrogate mother.

Even the puppies from these glowing dogs, glow. haha

Engineered Evolution. Whether good or bad.

Imagine the Advertisement.

"Girl comes home, can't find her dog, but notices the door left open, runs into the dark night, sees a glowing object behind a trash can, happy puppy walks toward her, she gives a sigh of relief" Buy Glow Pups now!

Can't wait till they make people glow, although you could completely tattoo yourself in that glow in the dark ink, neat!

Didn't they already do this with 'swine', except they were green?
Also, they don't glow in the dark without a UV light source, so the girl finding a glowing puppy in the dark is kind of a stretch, but nice try.

edit: Here we go - Green Piglets

Ohhhh arn't the cute.

WTF? these mad men are playing with genes and people think it is a cool novelty trick and want one.

These people are mad men with no ethics and are trying to create all sorts of mutations and people think its OK?

Either I am the only sane one left or I have gone completely mad.

this is ridiculous....

what the hell are we doing making glowing dogs?
I'm willing to bet it dies of some obscure dog disease while still young....you cant just make glowing dogs without some side effects.

well I guess if doesn't die then I'm all for it, lets start making fire breathing dogs to, and flying hamsters....it's never gonna stop. If you can imagine it, then it will probably happen one day...

If they could put this stuff in adults, I think the dance kids would go crazy for it. Imagine a club lit up by nothing but glowing ravers.

I wonder how long until we start creating engineered monsters and using them in wars instead of people. Robots versus Chimera. Sci-Fi stuff.

This is awesome! I've had this idea for at least 5 years but with cats instead of dogs.

I wonder how hard it would be to make different colored fur on cats? Purple cats anyone?

If we're playing with genes, hopefully one day they will find the "I DONT GIVE A FLYING #" gene in cats, so one day I will be able to call my cat, and see it come, rather than look at me for a second, then walk away.

Well. Were all Ats'rs. So you should know that. If you are seeing pictures of glowing dogs. Then it stands to reason that the people, Or, Techniques behind it are by now light years ahead. Its what we dont see that scares me.

Your not the only one. When all is said and done and the short initial 'cool' thought subsides it still begs the ultimate question...

Why?

You know what would suck? If reincarnation were true and you came back as a lab animal/experiment.

I realize we need to test things on animals and that's bad enough but arguably necessary.

But, you have to draw the line somewhere. I do not agree with transgenic experiments.

Glowing is quite unnecessary unless you live in complete darkness like many miles under the sea.

A huge side effect is it makes you easily hunted down or tracked at night.

Maybe scientists will engineer some glowing worker slaves that are easy to track down when they run away.

Or maybe you will have to live in a certain work colony if you glow a certain color or pattern.

Or maybe killer bees will attack all those puppies.

if you know someone that is going through the phenomenon that's being currently called "Morgellons" ...
view THEM under UV light....

same type of effect.

They should cross the glow gene with swine flu that way they can tell who is a carrier!
