Also today, California became the first state in the nation to do its own confirmatory testing for this strain of swine flu without having to send samples to the Centers for Disease Control, which will greatly speed up detection efforts in California.
World stock markets fell sharply Tuesday as investors worried that any swine flu pandemic could derail a global economic recovery. Stocks of airlines, hotels and other travel-related companies already posted sharp losses Monday.
For an ailing global travel industry, swine flu couldn't have erupted at a worse time.
"It has the potential to paralyze travel," says Roger Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, which represents all segments of the U.S. travel and tourism industry. "Certainly if it gets out of hand," it will be catastrophic.

Considering the rapidly increasing number of confirmed swine flu cases, WHO officials have decided to raise the pandemic alert level to phase 5.
Swine Influenza (swine flu) caused by type A influenza, regularly leads to influenza outbreaks among pigs. The virus does not normally infect humans.
Confirmed sufferers in the United States and Mexico, however, are believed to have spread the disease to their families and others in close contact.
