Alberta culls 500 pigs in herd infected with swine flu

About 500 hogs have been culled on a pig farm in central Alberta where the herd was found to be infected with the new swine flu virus.

Authorities in Edmonton said the decision to kill the animals came after discussions between the producer and federal and Alberta officials.

They said it was the best course of action for the welfare of the herd and it eased overcrowding conditions on the farm.

The remaining herd of 1,700 pigs remains under quarantine. Health officials said because of the quarantine the producer was unable to ship hogs to market and, as a result, the farm had reached maximum capacity.

The top theory I am favoring right now is an accidental release and they know, but have to keep up appearances by not letting all of the information out to the public in a coherent manner. And they know what is coming...

Mixed in ith that are thoughts that they truly know what is coming next and are so scared %$@#% -less that they are desparately trying to cover their tracks while keeping the information hidden.

Finally, also playing into this scenario somewhere is the possibility of terrorism, which also scares the snot out of them should the public find out before they can get thier ducks in a row....

Thanks for this poll idea! It's a good way for those of us without insider info to let air thoughts out.

have a peaceful weekend, the weather is beautiful and the bird are singing!

Hey guys nice information gathering! One thing to keep an eye on is the H2N3 virus (not sure if that is the right order am really tired.), there has been a few articles in closed circles that are suggesting it may be a mutation of the piggy flu....not good. But they are onto testing it all so, perhaps they will figure something out in the next week or two.
Also I am not doing much better yet. Been sleeping like mad and loading up on every get well thing on earth at this point! It just isn't helping as of yet and I am going back in again to see if they are going to put me on steroids and kick up the nebulizer treatments (breathing treatments of albuterol that is suspended in saline. Basically relives the inflammation and makes you cough till you get dizzy). As I am still sick with the bacterial bronchitis but have suddenly stopped being able to cough it out. Will let you know if I get any more info between sleeping and crawling around....

The persons who wrote earlier post's about being ill really need to keep an eye on their lungs as this first variant seems to be causing a massive load of lung infection whether viral or bacterial.
Mine has gone into 20/21 day intervals. So just be well and eat a really healthy diet as best you can and load up on fluids. Must get back to bed as I am getting dizzy

Hello

I am new to ATS but have been reading this thread since the pandemic started. You all have been wonderful keeping the "news" out there.

I joined so I could thank you all for your efforts and support the ongoing efforts.

Yes, I am someone that fears pandemics, BUT I think I had this one at the end of March. Woke up one morning with a temp of 102, body aching, adn coughing. By the next day I had so much mucas I could barely breathe without coughing. Went to my doc here in Northern CA and I was wheezing and my lungs were filling up fast! Pneumona in 24 hours! WOW, talk about fast!

So they gave me the Z pack, and two inhalers... one to open things up and the other to use long term (3 months). It took 2 weeks to get well enough to return to work.

I am no longer using the inhalers (either of them) but have them "just in case". So here I am wondering if it was the swine flu? Entire family got it. Everyone ok now.

As for my votes, since I have been reading... I agree with the Captain Tripps and I think that this was something that "escaped" from a lab. But they did not know of the missing virus until April. I do think that it escaped back in Feb. 2009.

I do not understand why they are not talking about the fly in the media (none of it) anymore. I believe it will come back, and it is here tostay for a couple of years.

I have stocked up so I and my family can survive about a month locked inside. Do you think I should get more???

Again, thanks for this thread and I hope it continues and that you will welcome me in!

I hope you get to feeling better soon; I had what I was told was a sinus infection that had me in bed every minute, when not at work, for two weeks. It was only Tuesday of this week when I finally snapped back to my old self..I was really getting worried. Had exteme fatigue, body aches,chills/sweating/no fever, no appetite, serious constant headache, lost 6 pounds, and just miserable for a long time.

So, maybe you are "rouding the bend"? Get some rest and stay away from anyone who looks like they could infect you with more germs. Hang in there and glad to see you are back here!-FMF

Welcome!!! Sorry to hear of your illnes, and if I had x money to bet, I would say you all had the H1N1 flu. Sure sounds like it to me..

I also feel like this was a "nasty mistake" that got away and they are trying desparately to keep it on the down low until they can figure out what to do next...and, they know what is coming down the road.

I think anything you have stocked up on will be helpfu. But if you're like me, it is never enough!
Thanks, FMF

Costa Rica reports 1st death of man with H1N1 flu
Sat May 9, 2009 5:21pm EDT
www.reuters.com...

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) - Costa Rica's Health Ministry said a 53-year-old man died on Saturday infected with the new H1N1 flu strain, the fourth country to report a death of someone ill with the virus that has sickened more than 4,200 people around the world.

The man also had diabetes and asthma, Maria Trejos, a spokeswoman for the Health Ministry, told Reuters. Doctors at the Health Ministry said they would have to wait for autopsy results to determine if the death was from the flu or complications caused by his other health problems.

"His case was confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention," Trejos said, adding the Central American country now had eight confirmed cases of the swine flu strain, including the man who died.

Thank you for the welcome! Wow, Alameda, CA 6 definate, 6 probable. Right around the corner from me! Yikes!

Does anyone have any ideas about if you have had the H1N1 now, you may be protected later?

Also, seems that twitter is slowing down on the flu. Am I right?

Why is no one paying attention anymore? Sure will when it goes BIG!
