And I'd not exist or be living in misery as I am part Jewish. I am glad that we won but I don't delude myself as to who did it.

A straight thrust to Moscow which is what most the generals in the Wehrmacht wanted to do would have beaten Russia, IMHO. Or at least smashed it's ability to effectively fight. But thankfully Hitler proved our greatest allie in that matter.

Millions of lives losts, destruction of countries, human cruelty at it's peak, atomic bombs, death camps, the following cold war, the scars that are still visible even today, my personal view of it is that there were no winners. War is the most stupid thing we humans have so much pride in. Never proofs anything but the same thing which is death and destruction. History would say that Russia ended the war offically in Europe, and the U.S did in the cowardly way with the use of Atomic bombs in the Pacific. There were many countries that did their part in ending the second world war, but I wouldn't really give credit to the U.S as coming in and stopping it, they helped but they aren't the ones who won it. That's just a typical American ignorance that helps them sleep at night.

"That's just a typical American ignorance that helps them sleep at night. "

It's not exclusive to the US by any means. Every country has their stories about WWII. Try going to the movies in Manila and see who REALLY won the war in the Pacific.

Check out the posts by carslake in this thread on Stalingrad.

Excellent posts and well worth reading.

Germany, IMO, didn't stand a chance given the level and detail of intelligence that the Soviets were receiving. At times it was only because von Mannstein disobeyed Hitler's direct orders that any progress was made by the Wehrmacht at all. Not because Hitler's orders were bad, but because in great detail everything that was said or done at OKH was being passed to the Soviets (and Bormann who had his own spies in situ).

lol, that is true. It just frustrates me when people don't even know who the u.s presidents were during ww2, all they know and were taught in school that the U.S came in and kicked everyones ass thus ending ww2, then have the nerve to throw it in other countries face in how they "owe us big time."

i am impressed by the tought of the responces...to be honest it annouys me when americans think they one the 2nd world war single handed!! they rem omaha but what aboy juno and swoard? by grand dad lost a leg at juno and he wasnt a yank. b4 we can defeat the currant enemy we did to join together and not just be "the yanks" its al people who want to live free not just steven spielberg people"

Of course the allies on total deserve the credit, but do understand that many of us speak from our particular experience, knowledge, and thus perspective. As an American, I myself tend to focus the majority of my attention upon the involvement in World War II of the U.S. Forces, but I have no disillusions about the involvement of so many of this world's nations, including but not limited to England, Great Britain in general, Australia, the Native scouts of the Solomon Islands, the Filipinos, the French, the Danes, the Dutch, the Belgians, the Canadians, so on, and so forth.

I actually have a close friend who was a child during World War II in England, and the stories he has are amazing, and they truly display the resolve and absolute tenacity that carried the British people through such tough times. If anything, World War II brought Great Britain and the United States closer together than ever before, and reminded us all of our unique and irrevocable friendship as a common people.

One shouldn't make blanket statements about Americans either. One or two posts don't speak for the over 350 million of us.

That's just as ignorant as the Americans that spew that " America won WWII"

We BOTH won because we worked together as allies to defeat Germany.

After world war 2 the world was essentially split into and divided equally among the US and the USSR.

We both won because we were allies. We were not fighting against each other.

Hell, we werent really fighting each other after words either (IMO). We were just both afraid of each other because we knew what we were both capable of and we both thought that the other would try to essentially take over the world. Thus, the cold war....

We both won.

This is always funny

Everybody always states that the Russians won WWII because they punished the Germans the most, but they always seem to forget about Japan and how they swept into China and pushed their way through the Pacific.

It was a WORLD war with the Soviets and the Americans taking on the brunt of the fighting with massive contributions from the UK and her common wealth nations.

Exactly Good point!

It was a combined global effort. The main contributors were the Soviets and the US. I agree with the above posters that it really depends on your perspective.

The soviets with the UK and Americans in the European campaign the UK and her common wealth nations and Americans in the pacific. Why does everybody always forget about the Pacific?

Great post

S then it was a trick question? You asked who won ww2. The US or the USSR. No part of your question had to do with our reaction/impression to each other before during or after ww2. If you wanted your answer to include that you should have said so... and not simply asked who won US or USSR.....

In the context of your question, we BOTH won because we worked together to defeat Germany, and we did. That is how we both won. We were NOT fighting each other during the war. Neither of us won more than the other.... It was either we both succeded together in stopping Germany or we failed together, luckily we succeded together....

I can only answer what you ask. I can not read your mind, so I am incapable of answering what you do not ask.... Are you meaning to ask who won the COLD WAR?

We DID work together to deafeat Nazi Germany, Even if our goals for the future were different, we both agreed that Germany could not remain as powerful as they were so we worked together to prevent Germany from becomming stronger. We both won in the sense that we worked together to stop Germany.....

We also both won in the sense that in the future we did not turn the cold war into a nuclear war.

The Allies won WWII by defeating the Axis.

If you want to be entirely correct. The what-ifs and breakdowns of events are both inflammatory and pointless.

Very well said. Simple and to the point. The Allies (which includes the US and USSR) defeated the Axis. The Axis won officially which is why USSR and the US along with the rest of the allies won.

Thank you for the help.
