Sorry to have to start a new thread on this, but I can't reply to any other thread in this forum.

I had a problem with replying to a thread earlier in another forum. Now another issue has arrived here...

I was in the process of writing a reply and added a link to a youtube video, I clicked preview.. right after that I saw that the button below said (can't submit) instead of post reply.

When you hit preview, the text you've filled into the 'reply' box is not recognised.. therefore it thinks that the minimum character count has not been reached..all you gotta do to fix it is add one more character to the post for it to be fully implemented and the submit button becomes valid again.

It was the same problem doing a reply in 'quote' 'reply to' or 'post reply' ..the same bug in all three formats.. was even doing this in other threads.

If I copy and paste my entire reply, the system still fails to recognise it until i add one more character.. be it a full stop or something. I then just delete the extra character and full 'pasted' reply gets the valid submit button.

But now I'm not getting any 'post reply', 'quote' or 'reply to' buttons..everything else is there, including the 'new thread' button.. it's just those three that are missing. The rest of the page is there, including all animated gifs and adverts.. even using direct search and click on the thread does not show these buttons...

So far, this new problem only seems to be coming from this Board Business forum.

Now, this may be of no consequence at all, but I want to make aware of an attempted attack on my computer about an hour or so before this happened. I have not had any other problems with the site, posts, threads, links.. anything..

This is the basic deatails of the IP that tried its little invasion before I got these problems.

Have CHANGED a few details for privacy etc.

Just been informed as to why I could see the reply to or quote buttons in two threads in this forum... They had both been 'closed' .... I did not see any post or info relating to them being closed so I guess I'm having a bit of a moment there

1) What browser are you using? I've not had any trouble with the preview function on this end.

2) That IP is Canadian, and not related in any way to ATS.

While I'm not "tech-y" enough to respond to your problem, I'd just like to mention that the part I quoted here is usually what you get when a thread has been closed, i.e. you can't reply to a thread...

Edit: I see someone else also pointed this out to you.

My take, on a new page the script to count hasn't run yet so despite the content it hasn't been checked and therefore the button is not enabled. The space causes it to run and enable to button.

I'm using the latest Firefox, my system is clean. Win XP pro on a Macbook.

sygate personal firewall pro
Avira antivir
spybot
advanced system care pro

and a few other methods of keeping me clean and sweet....

I'm wondering if it was due to the youtube link being posted in and then previewed.. it might have somehow ignored the rest of the text..

Yep I had a similar problem earlier starting a thread in the Military & Govt forum earlier today. Put my post together, hit preview (which it did) but the button underneath said "can't submit".

So I had to C&P my contribution to a word document then try again without previewing.

Firefox 3.0.8.

If the preview had some onload event that triggered the count this might not happen. it seems obvious that on a regular post a characters should be typed. The preview might be an exception since a person has already entered their post material. Time will tell..

The reason you can't submit after you hit preview post is because your character count resets to 10000. You should go into your post and hit a space or delete or whatever to make sure the character counter is set correctly. Then you will be able to post your reply

Thanks WUK, that's exactly what I ended up doing.. It was just all a new experience for me
not had that problem at all, ever... until now.

But I'm glad that more of us are now aware of this and it should help to stop a lot of threads like this one

I was in a u2u session with one of the mods over this earlier... just in case any immediate info like this was available and known.

I've had some similar problems, namely being unable to preview a new thread. When I tried to the screen refreshes back to the text box, resets the character count and adds backslashes in front of apostrophes. The buttons then go to 'can't submit.' This also happens on normal replies. I find that hitting the return key resets the count and allows posting.

Out of interest I saw a post earlier that also had the backslashes and new that he or she had previewed before posting

This is exactly what I've run into. I could'nt preview and got the backslashes when the button was hit. Somethings screwy on my end too.

We have so much more to do now because someone came up with this
stupid "zero tolerance" bull.
I had two posts lost yesterday because of this. And they weren't one-
liners !!

If you tell us how much we should say, and you tell us how to say it, why
don't you just tell us what to say too ? Wait a minute, you won't need our
input anymore anyway !

If this doesn't have enough characters, I don't care.

What happened to FREEDOM ?

I'm getting the exact same thing. Not sure at all what the reason is, but it happened after going to preview. I started fresh, even closing out the browser and restarting then tried to post without the preview. Was using the external link in brackets for a quote.

Don't seem to be having any problem with this reply.

Yup same exact problem here. I am glad someone else posted this because I started to think it was a problem on my end. I am also running Firefox 3 along with noscripts plugin. At first I thought it was noscript but then after disabling it just to see I still had the issue so it wasn't that.
A lot of the new features here seems to be causing more problems then good.
Just like with the media portal I can't post images because it won't even let me sign up so now I can't use an avitar. Good grief!
Hope they get the kinks worked out soon.
BTW posting a reply seems to work sometimes, but not others. It's working while replying to this, but not in a thread I was just in and I typed plenty enough.

The bugs in the preview post function should be worked out now.

I'm not sure I follow some of the other complaints here, they're not very descriptive. What exactly is happening?

I am having a similar problem today. I am trying to start a thread in the short story forum. I am pasting from a word document. After the text is pasted, the submit and preview buttons are greyed out. I can add an extra space at the end of the submission and the buttons become available. However, when I try to post, I am brought back to the same thread creation page with all of my text gone. Any suggestions?

~~I tried several more times and was eventually allowed to post. Maybe this was only a temporary problem!~~

Wuk had the answer to the problem I was experiencing.

It had to do with the quoting function automatically driving the post character count to a surplus (over 4000 in my case). Backspacing in the reply brought the number to the actual count and then no problem posting at all.
