The problem with Drake's equation is that you have to assume a lot of variables: This site explains them very well. Depending on the numbers you can get between millions of civilizations in the milky way to less than 10 civilizations.

I once read a book which also took in the time it takes for the intelligent life to develop. With their numbers, they got 1-5 civilizations in the milky way at the moment.

...and when all is said and done...it's all still mathematical conjecture. There's no real way of computing how many civilizations are truly in the Milky Way. We will never know until we are equipped to actually seek out OIL.

In a book im reading entitled "A short history of nearly everything" it touches upon an equasion developed by a professor named Frank Drake. His equasion works with the average distance between stars, which is 20 million million miles.

"If you divide the number of stars in a selected portion of the universe by the number of stars that are likely to have planetary systems; divide that number by the number of planetary systems that could theoretically support life; divide that by the number on which life, having arisen, advances to a state of intelligence; and so on. With an average of 100 - 400 billion stars in a galaxy, the number shrinks colossally, but eventually runs into the millions....with millions of civilizations the average distance between any of these two civilizations is reckoned to be at least two hundred light-years." Exert from book

I was wondering what your guys take on this is? Is this good evidence or should it just be thrown out?

*ducks from possible flaming*

Well now there are better odds, we can add mars to the list ! heheh

Everyone thinks that WE are the less superior race... we are visited by aliens. This means that thier technology is far superior to our technology.

well wouldnt that be cool if we were superior to some other civilization? maybe there is life on mars, maybe its inteligent life, and they see humans as aliens. Maybe they saw our pods landing down, and our Mars rovers, rovering about... and they look at us as gods, just as we looked at our alien visitors as gods... i think that would be cool, but its just a thought...
