Radford University locked down after shooting death near campus

(CNN) -- Students at Radford University in Virginia locked their doors and were being warned to stay inside Thursday after a man was shot and killed near campus.

A man was shot in the chest and killed in a residential area a couple of blocks from the school's Radford, Virginia, campus at about 9:10 p.m., according to university spokesman Michael Hemphill.

He said authorities believe the shooter then fled onto campus.

In a series of phone calls, e-mails and text messages, students were being warned that the university was on lockdown.

The spokesman said he did not know if the shooting victim was a student at the university of about 7,500 students.

City, state and campus police were searching for the shooter, Hemphill said.

Virginia Tech University police were also helping in the search because Virginia Tech is about 20 minutes away from the shooting, according to the spokesman.

People in the region of the shooting....killer is on the lose be careful. I wonder if this is another surge of university shooting..what the hell is wrong will people. I just hope that they catch this person quickly and avoid more victims. We don't have more info yet...will post more as soon as more information is available..........

I don’t think it is one of those suicide mass attacks we have seen recently. Hope they get the killer soon before more people loose their lives.

I'm 15 minutes from there. Let's hope he's not another Cho, and is finished with his destruction.

Not a lot of extra information out there. Fox News seemed to have some information on the suspect.

Not likely. I lived in Radford (RHS 91)at one time and the area we are talking about is not an area that would have those kind of issues. Maybe on the other side of town. I will ask my friends that live there still about this later on another site.

Drugs are everywhere nowadays. You may not have had this problem before, but everything has a start.

Absolutely, there are drugs here. Not just Mary Jane either. The really nasty ones.

Nothing I would be proud of for this area.

Do you think Beaver Cleaver ever had to worry about Crack dealers, and friends dying with overdoses?
