Are you sure you see "fingers" in that image?
This is the original image (from Sol 68), cropped to show just that small area and with levels adjusted without any loss of data.

As I said in a previous post, as they have left camera and right camera photos of this area, we can make a 3D composite (but apparently nobody has
those red-blue glasses to see the 3D image I made. It's a shame because it gives an excellent idea of the depth of the scene) or an animation to try
to see it in 3D, like this.
First, a faster animation to give the idea of depth.

other thing) and part of the ground behind it. The "ribcage" is not aligned to the "head" and it's perpendicular to the "head".
Now, a slower animation to make it easier to compare the left and right view.

I hope this shows why I think this is just an optical illusion.
