New Vaginal Gel Stops AIDS Virus

www.webmd.com

March 4, 2009 -- A new kind of vaginal gel prevents sexual transmission of the AIDS virus in monkey studies.

The anti-HIV ingredient in the gel is glycerol monolaurate or GML. It's already FDA approved as an ingredient in cosmetics and medicines.

The surprise finding that GML can block HIV comes from basic research showing that the AIDS virus gains a foothold in the vagina by taking advantage of the body's immune system. Immune responses to the virus draw T cells -- the white blood cells HIV loves to infect -- to the site of infection. Without T-cell recruitment, HIV loses its grip.

I find this discovery extremely encouraging and curious. However, if something already approved by the FDA proves to work, it will become a free for all. I'd imagine that if this cure was found without prior FDA approval, it would never get approved.

Good stuff. Sometimes it takes an accident to circumvent FDA corruption.

If you think about it... it then shouts "I HAVE AIDS!!!!" to your partner if they dont know.

"one sec, we need some lube"
"hurry up!"
"omg! what is that?!!?"
"um honey... I have aids lube."

I was thinking more along the lines of women using it to prevent getting hiv. Did I read the op wrong?

I would not jump on the "we are once again free to be sexually free with no other protection" until further tests are done on actual humans.

This also has no reference to prevent unwanted pregnancies either.

A green light to all those sexually deprived teens? It very well could be.

Be preapred for the unwanted and teen pregnancy rate to skyrocket.

Cheers!!!!

He was just kidding. Yes it has proven to prevent aids transfer in monkeys. And if it widely successful it already sells and is FDA approved. No worries.

You though might hear, you got a condom? Nope. But I got AIDS Gel.

I would feel much more at ease sending my teenagers out the door with a condom AND this new gel, on top of being on the pill. You can't have too much protection.

FYI there is no AIDS virus, AIDS is a disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) .

For some reason, I found this statement wildly hilarious next to a Data avatar. It is totally in character.

This is good news, and I long for the day when we can all make like bunny rabbits in the streets when a cure for aids is discovered.

You know, in college my professor from like Undergrad. Bio II did research with the grad Bio students that found nonoxynol-9 was actually an effective microbicide in preventing HIV. Could possibly have been used on its own but with condoms HIV would be completely avoidable. Other research at other universities later confirmed this....but the FDA didn't want to hear about it...
Wonder why!

Not to mention the effect it will have on our seniors in "rest homes". Since the advent of Viagra, et al, STDs have spread like wildfire in the "senior" demographic. The days of "Wine and Roses" are now "The Nights of Gel and Viagra"!
