I was looking at the Aus EQ monitoring site earlier and they said they don't have enough historical data and monitoring equipment in place to make qualified predictons in assessing hazards. Whereas the US, Canada and Japan have more EQ data to go on. Who knows though, these could be precursers to a larger quake.

That is a very viable possibility also. Perhaps they are related.

I wonder if harmonic resonance would have an effect on the magnetic field? If so, it would DEFINATELY send them all screwy.

Hammerhead sharks for instance, can swim out upwards of 100 miles in one night and return to the same spot the next morning. They use the magnetic field.

In California, that would be a foot massage.

I read somewhere (today) that the polarity shift could happen anytime and there is evidence that it might not be a slow and prolonged process. It can happen very fast.

Man that's crazy, so do you not get earthquakes in Australia much?
I usaully feel about 2 a year out here in NZ, never had a big one in my lifetime. But there was a reasonable one in Picton when my mum was a child, and my dads mum lived in Murchison in 1929 when a 7.8 was centred there. She said they were outside and the ground was rolling and they got thrown in there air by it.
Anyway hope that's it for Melbourne because you don't want a big quake.

That is kinda' what led me to the idea that the beachings may be a magnetic event.
The theory is earth crust displacement. However, I wouldn't think such a drastic event would happen unless something VERY, VERY large passed by near the Earth moving at a pretty good clip. It would require some serious pull to get the Earth to spin over its interior, I would suspect (although I very well could be wrong)...

But anyhow, I wonder if the same thing can be prevailant on a smaller scale causing the beachings and quakes to coincide.

I'm in West Melbourne and for the last two days my dog has been crazy. Mostly at night, where he would normally settle down sometime after dinner, relax in his bed and be calm, the last two nights he's been hyperactive.

Really strange behavior as I know his routine and along with the hyperactivity, he's been really sooky. High pitched crying like noise and he would constantly sniff the air.

We thought it might have something to do with the fires here in Victoria, but they are over, and when they where at their peak, it didn't seem to worry him at all, we all could smell the smoke.

Last night was the worse. Around 8:30ish he started pacing up and down the house, kept sniffing me, pushing me with his nose and whimpering. The misses kept asking if I'd taken him to the toilet, because he was acting weird. So I'd open the back door, he'd take a step outside, sniff the air, drop his head, and tail would go down and he'd come straight back in the house.

Now here's the weirdest bit, a couple of minutes before we felt the quake, my missus asked me to come look at the dog. So I go to the front lounge and there he was in his cage! (the cage is for when we go out for long periods without him - he doesn't really like the cage much, and never sleeps or rests in it, for him I guess, the only time he's in it is when we're going out, and he's not happy about that)
He was sitting in his cage shaking, like he was is trouble. As I was looking at him, I got down low in the cage doorway and the missus was saying should we take him to the vet, maybe he is sick? .....the house shook!

LOL he slept with us last night in the lounge as we set up the spare mattresses on the floor, just incase there was more.
Today he is fine, 100% back to normal, so I guess we wont be getting anymore aftershocks or anything.

I am now a firm believer in dogs knowing somethings up.

Wow...

All you Americans making fun of us for talking about this... go jump.

We don't get anywhere near as many earthquakes as you, nor are they usually this strong.

Plus, the fact that it did happen after the beaching of those 200ish whales and dolphins certainly warrants the discussion.

If you have nothing to add except how awesome America is because you get shook around more often, then go away.

Chadwickus, maybe you just have bad sense of touch, because the map shows two isolated events in Australia both 4.5+

Hey, I'm pretty sure someone predicted an earthquake here on ATS

Check out this thread: 194 Pilot Whales

Sorry I'm not sure what you're talking about?

If you're talking about my first reply in this thread I was addressing someone who suggested the rumble near Broome was what effected Melbourne, which is impossible.

Not sure how that implies I have a bad sense of touch though?

I was actually the first to post up the Melbourne quakes details.....Again not sure why you've singled me out?

Ok... I really don't want to sound like one of those tin-foil wearing idiots but...

I live east of Melbourne, and was the only one up when the ground shook last night. I have been through many earthquakes in my life, as I spent 11 years in New Zealand (earthquake capital of the world). Last nights quake really scared me, not just because of the initial fright to this experienced earth-shaker, but also because I had an image of black helicopters, which I mentioned to my wife.

You may say cool... that's fine... and mutter under your breath this guy is a freak... Or maybe not? When in walking down Main Street this morning, some black unmarked Blackhawk helicopers flew over from the south east. They were so low that everyone in the shops ran out to take a look.

Would somebody please tell me that these things are not connected, and that everything is normal? Just an SAS exercise, will put my mind to rest.

Keep on shaking Melbourne!

Tim

Personally I think they could be connected.
We've seen way too much of this sort of thing in Southern Ca the last year or so.
Sorry - I don't trust the green military or black copters -
They are way too prevalent of late.

have a look at this earthquake data. why are so many at 10kms deep? maybe there is some sort of underground tunneling operation going on or something.

There's a bit on USGS that explains - that 10's and I believe 35's - are default for when they are unsure of the depth.
They changed one of the 10's to 6.3 depth - today - I think.

I think they are intentional hits sometimes though ... and not just default numbers.

I'm sorry but I just don't believe you. Your turning a natural event into some psychic paranoid fantasy where the g-men and their black helicopters are behind it all. Your also saying that you come from the Quake capital of the world yet this tiny little shake petrified you? Theatrics man! Honestly! Let's not degrade this thread any further!

Come on people, lift your game! If you want to talk about alien tunnels, MIB's and stuff, take it to Skunk Works! This ain't the thread you want!

umm, now that u mention helicopters...

The day before there was a helicopter just flying over our area, for around 30 minutes, it was mostly just in one place,. for around 5 minutes, then moved, stayed there for 5 minutes and so on, and we never get helicopters over our area that late at night, was around 10pm

Anything that registers in the 5.0 range is terrifying. I don't care who you are or where you come from. At around 5.0, you get the definate feeling that the structure you are enclosed in can come down. And that is scary.

Underground tunneling is a matter for skunkworks?

That statement is foolish (we'll leave the alien part out of it, as it is irrelevant).

That being said, this was an EarthQuake.

It is interesting how there was a quake there. But, I am still betting, I hate to say but....... there will be a bigger quake yet within 5 days. What is interesting is the USGS does not plot quakes that happen in Australia, but I found one that does..

link:
www.emsc-csem.org...

There have been LOTS of quakes this last month in Australia, plus there is a triangle going on, each corner of Australia has gotten some quakes..

EDIT: the ones listed on this map are ONLY the 4.0 and higher mags.

Perth had one yesterday:

Date time 2009-03-05 at 12:53:49.3 UTC
Location 30.2 S ; 117.85 E
Depth 10 km
Distances 274 km NE Perth (pop 1,446,704 ; local time 20:53 2009-03-05)

I would bet.... there is going to be a whole lot more of shakin goin on, downunder. I am keeping my eyes opened down there.

I'm not so sure that it is the sound. Although it may be a factor, I think the animals are acting the way they are because of a disturbance in the magnetic field.

But I think I've mentioned this already. It just doesn't make sense to me that animals would beach themselves to escape the sound when assuredly there are humans in the water also. If the sounds were unbearable, we would hear humans talking about it.
