Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban

abcnews.go.com

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

Well this is not exactly surprising to anyone who knows Obama's stance on gun control. It looks like the gears are in motion to ban assault rifles in the U.S.

In the article the current administration seems awful happy to change our current laws for the greater good of Mexico. As seen above "it will have a positive impact in Mexico at a minimum" but my question is, how will it help America?

Could be worse.

They could stage a massacre with an AR15 and use that as an excuse to ban them like they did here...

Here we go again - and this time, it is for the greater good of MEXICO !!! I'm so proud of my country for restricting my rights for the sake of foreign nations...

Crap - I have spent so much money already, guess I better buy what I can now. This looks like it is getting traction since ABC has the story. Could be a matter of months at the most.

Stupid Barry. Bad Barry.

It won't. Clintons ban was shown to have no impact whatsoever on crime save for turning a bunch of previously law abiding individuals into felons overnight simply for owning something they always have.

Seeing as how these items are the only things selling right now an AWB could only doors harm this time around than it did last time.

For Mexico!!!

Will this just ban the sale of any future assault rifles or will they become outright illegal? I'm a little confused on that issue. Will people who currently own them have to turn them in or face legal action?

Something else to think about - how does banning certain SEMI-AUTO weapons in the USA help curb the influx of FULL-AUTO weapons and GRENADES the cartels use??

This would be funny if it weren't so sad. With all the problems our nation faces (like PROSECUTING BANKSTERS) the first thing Holder starts yapping about is banning "assault weapons". Shows you where his priorities are. What a JOKE of an AG. I know 100 people with more integrity and greater allegiance to the US Constitution than him.

The last time owners were " grandfathered" but many states added their own arbitrary registrations and fees under threat of confiscation.

The ban set a date at which all rifles manufactured prior to were still transferable but this increased their cost as supply was limited. Suddenly a $600 rifle cost $1200.

The numerous configurations ( all of which were purely cosmetic) of at-15's made them a nightmare to declare assault rifles while not forcing all semi- autos into the category. The typical black rifle is just a semi-auto like so many others but because of its look morons demanded it be inccluded in the ban so nit picking began and in states like CT MA and CA it never stopped. How the at-15 is. Handled under the AWB is testament to theabsurdity of the AWB.

Thisguy, thanks for the info that clears up a lot of my questions.

And I agree Sailor this has absolutely nothing to do with Mexico, it's just another front to get the clueless population on board.

You know we don't want the scary Mexicans shooting us all to bits

It won't help Mexico at all.

If I want an assault rifle, and it's illegal, what do you think I'll do?

Get it anyway.

And since when is Mexico a child to be spoon fed? They're big boys. I'm sure they can settle whatever problems they have themselves.

Considering the recent disruption of the Mexican drug cartel this administration has painted a huge bull's eye on itself, and its citizenry.
The cartel guys are not the most understanding, and when someone takes away their livelihood, it is very likely some retaliation will occur. And to say they are not nice, is an understatement.

Let the heads begin rolling. I remember another young AG, as well as a president, that decided to go against a major crime organization. They are not with us any longer.

Should anything happen, let's all hope it it accomplished with something other than a firearm.

According to the U.S. gov we dealt a "crushing blow" to the drug cartels. I didn't know that siezing 59 million dollars and a tiny percentage of drugs was a crushing blow but who am I to question their statement.

IMO a crushing blow would have to be complete dismantling of the cartels not just rounding up the bottom feeders and a tiny % of the drugs and money they control.

So they're using drug cartels in Mexico as an excuse to punish Americans?
This makes sense. This is your vote America. I hope you're happy with it.

They are also working on an ammunition import ban.

No Valentine Coming From the North

A report making the rounds in Canada that says officials have it on "good authority" that our State Department may be on the verge of cutting off all imports of certain calibers of ammunition.

Ammos listed for this rumored ban include the .50BMG, 7.62x39mm Soviet, 7.62x51mm NATO, .308 Winchester, 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington. Additionally, we're hearing that an expansion of this proposed ban might be broadened to include the 6.8mm SPC, 9mm Parabellum, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP- among others.

In other words, State Department officials may be floating a trial balloon to see if there are howls of protest, or whimpers of compliance. Canadian elected officials who have directed this information to me say the move seems to be motivated by "emboldened" anti-gun officials who think they have a kindred spirit in President Obama.

And also a blanket firearm export ban to Canada.

Additionally, Canadian officials tell me they are hearing rumblings of blanket export bans on certain firearms to Canada and the attachment of DSP-83 End Use Certificates (with their $250 Export Fee) attached to all other types of American firearms.
