UAE plans ban on negative economic reporting

www.boingboing.net

The United Arab Emirates is considering legislation that would criminalize publication of anything that would "harm the economy." Already, the local press is pulling back from their coverage of the steep decline in Dubai property values and the rise in deportations, voluntary departure, and abandonment of unsaleable assets, such as cars.

After reading an earlier post on the current state of Dubai I decided to read up on the situation and came across this article.

It seems like the United Arab Emirates are in damage control mode and don't want anymore negative press spread about their precious Dubai.

I'm wondering if other country's have instated such legislation so far or if Dubai is the first to propose such legislation. At this point I don't think it will help them out any, in my opinion it will only hurt their business.

That is what totalitarian countries do, they want to keep the people dumb and stupid.

In America the government still gives away reports but the numbers are manufactured to make the bad news look better

There's a reason why we don't believe the federal government.

Anyways, no one should be surprised about this news item.

Yeah, that's the way to handle a problem that will happen anyway. Shut everyone up about it so as to minimize your chance of fixing the problem. NEWS FLASH UAE the rest of the WORLD needs to know what you're doing if they're going to invest at all. That includes knowing the risks of financing your farce of a nation.

Idiots.

I could not agree wit you more, why would anyone want to invest at all if they are not getting valid information on the state of the nation. Pretty bad move that will not help solve a damn thing.
