As the late but famous senator from Illinois Everett McKinley Dirksen (1896-1969) once said, “A billion here and a billion there and pretty soon you’re talking real money!”

As a good Democrat, I like to relate the tale about Republican Sen. Dirkesn. When speaking to his newly elected son-in-law, Howard Baker - the ”what did he know and when did he know it” - senator from Tennessee he said, “Son, never cast your vote until the money is in the bank.”

I must explain this is not what it looks to be. Senator Dirksen knew that on any issue, there were people (say lobbyists) on either side willing to “donate” to your campaign if they thought you’d vote their way! Once you had made up your mind how you would vote, you’d arrange to meet those who favored your position to “collect” your “contribution.” There is nothing NEW about K Street or Jack Abramoff.

Remember he was but one of 40,000 registered lobbyists. If the 39,999 remaining lobbyists chip in just $1 a month to Jack, for his silence, he will have a very nice kitty awaiting him on release.

reading this makes me sick

cops are out of hand

their policies and procedures are abuses of their authority and they go against everything our forefathers made this nation for

i myself have not been the victim of a no knock warrant but i have seen them take place on 2 occasions

1 time, the person was a criminal, should have been arrested, but in my opinion the way they did it made me sick

he was probably only 18 years old, in a family house, i watched everything happen from my window, not only did the cops break in like they were robbers, but they destroyed the house like they were robbers, after they broke in, they arrested the kid, then for the next 3 hours all you heard was smashing from inside the house

the other time i saw it happen, the person was completely innocent, and a good citizen

in my opinion, theres no need for no knock warrants, and if there ever is a need for one, its maybe only 1 out of a million, definitely not needed as much as it is used

the only time they should be used is in life threatening situations

they should NOT EVER be used just because of some suspected drug activity or crap like that

if theres suspected drug activity, do police work, stake out, surveillance, then get the person when they leave the house

the fact cops are raiding houses on marijuana warrants is absurd

even coke or heroin, its not worth the risk, this isnt the old west, we dont need to go in guns blazing, that will only lead to escalation

the more they use these tactics, the more the criminals will get used to them

all that will happen is the criminals will eventually turn the houses into fortresses and shootouts will occur everytime they try these no knock things

or if it isnt a shoot out, its because its some elderly woman in the damn house

if there isnt a atomic bomb in someones house, if some child or woman isnt being held hostage, if there isnt a LIFE threatening situation, we should not give the police ANY RIGHT to turn it into a life threatening situation, we the people must take this no knock warrant crap out of the law enforcement arsenal

people arent killed over marijuana, that is until the law enforcement gets involved

the only reason marijuana has ever gotten anyone killed is because its illegal

we need to change these policies to rid ourselves of these loopholes the police constantly abuse

ALL of law enforcement should be held responsible for this old womans death, as they were all involved in implementing these gestapo tactics

heil hitler (we might as well all be saluting him, we're using his ideas and methods)

completely ludicrous

the ludicrous part is that this isnt the first time something like this happened, and unfortunately, i know damn well this wont be the last time it happens and some corrupt cop plants a bag of weed or some stolen unregistered gun on the scene

next thing we know, cops will just do this crap then run to the kitchen put some flour in a bag lay it next to the body and say they were trying to sell fake coke and start prosecuting us for keeping flour in the house

edited just to add detail about the 18 year old

when he was arrested, it wasnt police in police uniforms, they looked like thugs, wearing dark clothes and masks, carrying heavy duty firepower and yelling

someone breaks down your door, u see masks and guns and violence, what would your reaction be?

i know if i had a gun, and that happened to me, well they may shoot me eventually, but not before i either unload all my ammo or die 1st

what makes me wonder, is how long it will take until criminals start using this same tactic

dress up in dark clothes, wear a couple cop markings barely detectable and just start running in peoples homes with guns screaming police police dont move, then just rob you blind after tying you up

cops suck balls

some are good some are bad, the majority ive ever heard of or seen, are CRAPPY! i only say crappy because i cant use the more profane accurate word

but just so people dont scream cop bashing at this post, i will say, on a few occasions ive seen and been helped by a few good men, unfortunately they arent the majority on the force

I myself have not been the victim of a no knock warrant but I have seen them take place on 2 occasions

(3) if there isn’t a atomic bomb in someone’s house, if some child or woman isn’t being held hostage, if there isn’t a LIFE threatening situation, we should not give the police ANY RIGHT to turn it into a life threatening situation, we the people must take this no knock warrant crap out of the law enforcement arsenal the only reason marijuana has ever gotten anyone killed is because its illegal

(4) some are good some are bad, the majority I’ve ever heard of or seen, are CRAPPY! 1) The Federal government does not have a juvenile law. Most states have under 18 as juveniles and do not get a record to go with them throughout their lives. The Federal laws define persons under 26 ½ as Youthful Offenders. First time non-violent offenders are almost always given probation on a first offense. Their record is also sealed.

I also oppose the quasi-military outfits, equipment and tactics. I want my cops in blue. I want more WAIT-OUTS and fewer shoot outs. I don’t want anyone shot in the back by a policeman. If he’s running away, we can probably catch him later. With 1000s of crooks out there, one more is not the end of the world as we know it.

2) I agree that the judges have surrendered to public pressure to make drug busts. If the judge can’t take the heat, quit the job. I have already remarked on the camo military type approach for civil law enforcement. I say NO!

3) Well, I ask, why can’t we build a fence around such a house? I mean, what’s the hurry? Look how we finally got General Manuel Noriega out of the Vatican’s Embassy by playing rap music with 10,000 watts day and night. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

4) I disagree on your proportions of good cop bad cops. I would say 80% good, 15% indifferent and 5% bad. And I may be low on good and high on bad. But there are a lot of cops who really don’t seem to like the job and should move on but probably cannot get a job paying equally. And early refinement is also a factor in keeping people who ought to bo gone. That by the way, needs to be changed to be more normal as to age and benefits. We cannot afford the current system.

A 20 year old becomes a policeman. After 20 years he retires at half pay. His replacement may also be 20 years old. After 20 years he also retires at half pay. His replacement may also be 20 years old. Now we are paying half pay to a 60 year old, half pay to a 40 year old and full pay to a 20 year old. If the first guy should live to be 80 - not impossible today - then we would be paying Guy 1, 80, half pay, Guy 2, 60, half pay, Guy 3, 40, half pay, and Guy 4, full pay and the only guy on the job.

Figure there are 168 hours in a week. Using 40 hours a week you need 4.2 men (or women) to put one man on duty. If half the men on duty are actually on patrol, the other half being on vacation, on sick leave, in training, are undercover, or in administration, then you can see the taxpayers may be spending $250,000 to GET ONE COP ON THE BEAT! We cannot afford this deluxe king of law enforcement!
