Washington sends $1 food stamp checks to 250,000

www.tri-cityherald.com

The state of Washington sent out $1 checks to the 250,000 food stamp recipients in the state.

The director of the Community Services Division for the Department of Social and Health Services, Leo Ribas, says the checks mailed Feb. 17 trigger an additional $43 million in federal food benefits. They also connect recipients to an energy assistance program.

Ribas says the $1 check is a one-time move to leverage the federal money. He says next year the state will be able to trigger the federal assistance through a routine deposit in food stamp accounts.

This is just straight up dumb how's one dollar going to help these people ... there are some very interesting comments that were made on the site that i thought would be a good addition to this and couldn't describe my feelings any better ...

commonsense said: And people wonder what's wrong. What a stupid move. It cost well over a dollar to mail the dollar check. so they dumped 250,000 in the toilet plus the 250,000 to the people. oh well 1/2 million is just chump change. This idiot Leo Ribas should be fired for incompetence and the moron who manages him. It's time for us to join the Sanetlli Tea Party

and another one from someone in Washington

heraldreader said: I know I sure as heck pay taxes. Why is it that Washington State can afford to help out so many WA residents with food stamps, welfare, WIC and all these other programs, but has to cut funding for the Yakima School for the disabled. These disabled people don't really have a choice they cannot go out and work like these hundreds of thousands of people who are too lazy to go out and get a job. If you think there are not jobs in the valley, come on down to Yakima Valley and pick some fruit. There are never enough laborers here. Oh one more thing. If you are on public assistance, you shouldn't be driving an Escalade or other $50,000 vehicle.

They are doing it to leverage the FEDERAL MONEY! The one dollar means nothing in the larger scheme of getting the Federal funds.

yeah i saw that, but if the taxpayers knew that almost half a million dollars was going just to boost money for the food stamps ... which in some cases go to people who really don't deserve it ... i'm sure that this would make most of the taxpayers mad...

The money isn't meant to help anyone. It's just being sent out to balance finance's/budgeting. Sometimes the monetary system makes no sense!

This is so obvious a trick to see who has a bank account they are not claiming.
I recive food stamps and recived my $1 check today and being i dont have a bank account i have no way of cashing it without spending $3 dollors at Walmart to cash a $1 check.

Just imagine all the people who follow the directions "DEPOSIT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE"
"May increase your benefits"

Of course people are going to deposit it without thinking that when the DSHS gets the canceled check back , they will know you have a account.
And if you denied having one , they will boot you off and might even make you pay them back benefits.

It's a pretty sneaky trick.. but if it boots people off welfare who don't need it.. it's a good plan.

I got one of these, since I live in Seattle and get food stamps, etc. i was really insulted by it. I took it and threw it in the garbage-straight up.

How cheap can you get?

Also I got mine about a year ago.

Good catch.

A banker gets a $250,000 bonus; 250,000 poor people each get a $1 check for food assistance.

It's trickle up economics.

I am sorry, but whoever wrote the post about the people who collect food stamps and wic are too lazy to get a job... you better think again. My husband was laid off from his job where he made 92,000 dollars a year, he has yet to find employment elsewhere and we have three children to raise. I think it is idiotic moronic people like you who need to have your head examined before making assianine comments like the one you just made. People need help and not all of us are lazy... so you can screw yourself.

People need to actually read what the OP posted.

Who here would NOT trade $250,000 for $43 MILLION? Anyone?

Thought not.

Sounds about right. I know NC would do about the same thing. My aunt got a energy assistance check last year for $55 from the state of North Carolina. Now we know that really helps to heat the house for a whole year. They wont deliver propane to her home unless if she buys at the least $250 to a time. So we can see how much the State will help her out for. Lets just hope this was not part of the wonderful Stimulous money they were suppose to give to the poor. Or the poor wont see anything.
