Here we go. I was wondering how long something like this was going to take.

Here is the link..www.gazette.com...

Here is a small taste..

THE GAZETTE

President Barack Obama's picture was removed this week from a Presidents Day sign at the Peterson Air Force Base commissary after customers complained that the image did not fit the holiday commemorating the birthdays of past presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

The head of the local NAACP and a commissary employee say it was blatant racism.

The picture of the first black president accompanied a sign near the entrance listing the government-run military grocery store's operating hours on for Presidents Day. The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Employees took the sign down after customers complained that the holiday wasn't about the current president, according to the Defense Commissary Agency, which oversees the base grocery stores.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, well. Notice that it was the customers who complained..not the officers.

Well you all decide...like the article says...is it racism or politics??

Probably a little of both.

I agree with the customers. Though the holiday is named President's Day, it was created to merge Lincoln's and Washington's previously separate holidays, not to celebrate all presidents. Now, had they had likenesses of all the presidents on display I wouldn't complain.

I think some people just need some hobbies.

I would say it and go..it's presidents day?

these folks definetly need a hobby.

I guess I am a racist pig because I do not believe the lies being spewed out of the mans mouth. I guess I'll end up going to the camp for not worshiping the Obamamessiah.

What is President's Day?

Washington's Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February. It is also commonly known as Presidents Day (or Presidents' Day). As Washington's Birthday or Presidents Day, it is also the official name of a concurrent state holiday celebrated on the same day in a number of states.

en.wikipedia.org...'s_Day

Well, according to the federal government, the holiday observed on the third Monday in February is officially Washington's Birthday. But many Americans believe that this holiday is now called "Presidents' Day," in honor of both Presidents Washington and Lincoln, whose birthdays are Feb. 22 and Feb. 12, respectively. It turns out that whether you honor one or the other or both of these presidents may depend on where you live.

Mr. Obama has nothing to do with this federal holiday, therefore, taking his picture down was appropriate IMO.

President's Day is a general observance of all presidents now. Mostly it is commercialism and a day off for state workers (which MLK no longer is for workers in Florida, go figure).

My guess is that a community which makes it living from soldiers and their families sees its livelihood going poof. Military careerists know that Democrats usually = downsizing unless Pakistan/Afghanistan/North Korea gets out of control. The officers tend to be better educated and have more "marketable" skills but the grunts don't unless they are cooks or mechanics and good luck finding those jobs now. Not to mention there is theoretically a whole social services and healthcare system military personnel have access to while on duty that they will lose if discharged (those of us who have dealt with it know how bad it is but at least it is there if they willl see you).

It's a tempest in a teapot.

The old-line race hustlers need something to harp about. It's not like the picture of the President of the United States is not posted in all the appropriate locations on the base.

I'm pretty sure that the military exchanges are now pretty much privatized, according to my observations. Certainly, their prices are much higher relative to the private sector than they were in my day.

At any rate, what the PX does in terms of promoting a holiday is not to be confused with appropriate official recognition of the Commander-in-Chief.

How ironic that the NAACP happens to be complaining and griping about this.
As far as I'm concerned it's the NAACP that should be taken down since their mission has been fulfilled and thus they no longer serve a purpose.

Think about it, NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Racism unfortunately still exists as long as people of different colors exist.

So, even though I may be white and I may respect people of other colors, other people who are white may not.

It's sad really.

If Obama's picture is appropriate, then all presidents should be there. President's day is for 2 presidents whose birthdays were around this time. I'm with the customers. And taking Obama's picture down is NOT racism. That's just silly.

Maybe President's day for Lincoln is something like being born on Christmas day or too near it to get any presents. Think about it, both holidays are consolidated into one. What would have happened should Lincoln have been born in another month?

good. it isnt obama's holiday and im glad it was taken down. maybe you should be making a post claiming racism that a national holiday was made in alabama for obama winning the election. now THAT is racism, not the crap you are spewing.

Now this is iconoclasm that I can get behind! You guys need to dismantle this cult of personality ASAP!

Sure one or two of the customers may be racist; but that really isn't a surprise. The vast majority probably just object to Obama being elevated to godlike status, and are using the technicality of presidents day as justification.

The name Presidents Day sounds like it is all presidents regardless of what the motivation behind the naming of the holiday was. I always liked Jefferson the best myself but for a promo for a hoiliday sale and people complain? Give me a break. Then those people that complain about the whiners who complained in the first place need to give me a break as well. If the store felt like putting the current presidents face up there with Washington and Lincoln so what? They should have stood their ground and kept the "controversy" where it should have been. Someone didn't like someone elses idea of freedom of speech. Tough tuggers.

Hey Swatman,

Thank you for the response.

I see now how you misinterpreted this post. Or maybe I could have worded it better. Which ever the case, here is my answer.

My emphasis on this was that the people wanted the picture down because it's President's day. Not the base personal dissing the commander in chief, but the average citizen.

I don't feel that his picture belonged in that place on this day.

As per my OP, about wondering when this sort of thing was going to start, well there it was.

They said four customers had complained that Presidents Day is to honor Washington and Lincoln, not Obama, causing the agency to remove the Obama image.

"The customers stated it is inaccurate to associate other presidents with this holiday and asked that we remove President Obama's photo from the flier," the agency said in a statement.

I'm still not getting the whole Alabama thing you seem so upset about. The whole country is/was Obama crazy when he got elected and even more so at the inauguration. If Alabama wants a national holiday because there guy won..well...why not. That's their way to support him even more I guess.

Reading between the lines of my OP I meant to convey the fact that racism and politics will be present until he leaves office and beyond. Get used to it.

then we should make September 11th an official Bush holiday in which everyone is off of work and school. and you cannot say no either because it is racist if you say no. if people want to celebrate a man that has done nothing but spent 1 trillion dollars with less than a month in office, then i want to celebrate a man who is called an idiot by many but somehow "outsmarted" everyone into 9/11 / afghanistan/ iraq/ etc. he deserves one too.
