U.S. Military Will Offer Path to Citizenship

www.nytimes.com

Stretched thin in Afghanistan and Iraq, the American military will begin recruiting skilled immigrants who are living in this country with temporary visas, offering them the chance to become United States citizens in as little as six months.

Immigrants who are permanent residents, with documents commonly known as green cards, have long been eligible to enlist. But the new effort, for the first time since the Vietnam War, will open the armed forces to temporary immigrants if they have lived in the United States for a minimum of two years, according to military officials familiar with the plan.

Didn't see this posted already, if it was, sorry.

I think it's about time, this can bring recruitment numbers up, and maybe eventually it will bring some of the illegals to serve as well, though they claim it's not going to happen. I think eventually, it would. Looks like the primary objective here is to get more translators.

I actually like this idea and I support it. If an illegal immigrant were to serve in our military I would gladly welcome him/her with open arms into our country and work force.

I'd like to correct one thing, this is not for illegals:

Uh huh...I don't like this because this is going to be a force of people who may be swearing to themselves and their bellies rather than the constitution. I'm an immigrant, legally, and have a brother in the Army who is not yet a citizen. He fights for this country, for me, for my mother, his kids and wife who are American..

These people would not hold an allegiance to our Constitution or our people. It's just another job to them, a contract for employment. If there's martial law, they will use them.

But these aren't people who have to be citizens. These are people who are here on visas, whether it be work or student. They would be making to choice to serve, not being forced to serve.

And nobody stated that it pertained to illegals, I just said that hopefully it may lead to it.

I realize that. But that's just like the French Foreign Legion. There's no personal attachment to France, they are just leaving a life behind they can't face. Take a look at what the FFL does for people who join for citizenship. And then look at what these people do to earn it.

This is not something for America to be doing. I guarantee they will earn their citizenship by pointing that rifle at other citizens, and those of us who love this country and want to be citizens to continue to serve the people. That's me.

After I get my green card I'm joining the air force because I want to be part of their space program. Because I want to see America succeed. Not because I want to fulfill a contract I signed.

I said "Force of people" not people being forced.

This is a twisted ploy from Starship Troopers!

Serve in the military and earn your citizenship, otherwise you'll be a civillian without the rights of a citizen.

The military is an evil beast. Yet, people will take up the offer. Sad.

This is blackmail.
We will give you citizenship - if you sign up for war.
Nope - this is bad.

Did you already stop to think about this?

The american model of military service is just a kinda of mercenary job to many of people. There are many people that join the army just to finance their college study or something else.

and the penny drops.........

So, now we know the REAL reason for border problems, something in the back of my mind knew this...just couldn't connect the dots.

agreed~~EXACTLY like Starship Troopers & the Roman empire, which has been on the net for years stating that USA was trying get to be like the Roman Empire was at one time...

with million upon million of illegal immigrants, the will swell to countless numbers, a beast that no one be able to make war against....where did I read that before .. hmmm..

course, then we'll have to keep in line with pumping money into the pockets of military personnel....

at yours truly.. the tax payers..well.. i'm glad i didn't vote, either way !

Recruitment is actually doing very good during recession.

And the military is just doing what every other company is doing, giving jobs to people who want to do it or do it for smaller fees since americans apparently feeling less and less patriotic these days.

Basically they're outsourcing your security. If only americans are not that picky about their jobs.

you don't seem to understand my friend, I appreciate your desire to serve the people...however..

once your in the military, YOU ARE THEIRS, THEY OWN you.. period. If you don't point that rifle, press the button to nuke a city... you'll be facing a Court Marshall....not a good thing to have on your record when you get out and start looking for a job if you ever get that far with a CM 'round your neck.

I'll be waiting for the courts/military to start wiping out records for prisoners as well...for the exchange to defend the country..

I said Starship Troopers too. Wonder when they'll turn the non-loyal ones on the Constitution.

Well, I saw this thread headline and I couldnt believe it.
I have been in the military, and for the longest time I have been one
to say ..
"hey, if you want to come to this country, and you really believe in something bad enough to die for it, then by all means, go to the front line"

To this day I still believe that, whether you are talkin about the military, your family, or your land...if you really are that willing to Die for something that you strongly believe in, then I am nobody to say you cant.

We in the US have a volunteer military. These immigrants are not being forced to join just to get citizenship. They are still free to go the more traditional route if they so choose.

I really think that people on ATS need to open their minds. Alot of you are so wrapped in conspiracies that to you, everything is a conspiracy. Deny Ignorance doesn't mean jump on everything as there is something sinister about it, it means open your mind to alternate possibility.

This is exactly what Alex Jones said they''d do..

get immigrants to push around the american citizens via military policing.

Yes! That is the first thing I thought when I read the title, and I can't believe it took 4 posts for someone to say it!

Oh, yeah: military=bad.

Can someone tell me the difference between an individual who joins the Military for a paycheck, and a mercenary?

Really, what is the difference?

I do understand. I know more about the military than even I care to as a civi. But the idea of non-patriotic foreigners serving in the military for money and citizenship bothers me. My brother and I gave up any and all ties to any other countries so that we could be proud Americans. Anyone seeking to be a true American, who CARES about America should be in. Criminals and the unpatriotic need not apply.

I don't see how this could be a new concept.

The US military actively seeks people outside of the nation for recruitment. I should know, it was a mere few days after I graduated that I had 2 pieces of mail from the US telling me why I should join the US Military and US Air Force.

... the point is, I'm Canadian.
I don't live in the US, never tried. My loyalties are with Canada, Europe, and Britain.

Clearly asking people who are already trying to live in the US isn't the least they've done. They ask people from other countries as well.

To me it wreaks of desperation.
