"Salt and Pepper" - Vietnam War deserters

Several times now I have heard little blurbs about 2 supposed US military deserters in the Vietnam War - a short Black or Hispanic guy nicknamed "Pepper" and a tall White guy nicknamed "Salt". The reports spanned a time period between 1969 and 1974 all in a particular area of the I Corps tactical zone.

I have only been able to find very little online including a thread on the Armchair General forums and a blurb on MIAFacts.org

Does anyone know anything more about this story? Anyone personally encounter them or hear anything about them?
