Australian republicans 'tried to assassinate Queen'

AUSTRALIAN republicans allegedly hatched a plot to assassinate the Queen when she visited the country almost 40 years ago.

A retired police detective has told to London’s Daily Mail that details of the conspiracy were kept quite so as not to embarrass the Australian government at the time.

Apparently a large log was placed on the train tracks near Sydney just prior to the royal train passing through. The train actually struck it, but was going too slow to derail. At normal speed it would have likely derailed and ended up down an embankment.

The timing of this news could be considered unfortunate for the currently strong push towards an Aussie Republic.
