In the UK, you can be shot by a policeman for carrying a table leg in a brown paper bag, a Scotsman has been so shot. this is on record

But we don't need them here.
What we need is responsible parenting and effective and open government addressing the many serious issues which face British society today.
Anything else is only papering over the cracks and will come back to bite us in the arse.

If tyrrany is a factor, then contingency plans are in place not only by the miltary, but also the monarchy. We have the best safety measures in place - IN THE WORLD.
Our borders are unguarded, our soldiers ill-equipped and underpaid, our government corrupt to the core. In the terms you are talking about I feel about as safe as a chicken in a fox den.

Perhaps you should move to the states then? You know, everyone has a gun, because the crims do, and that makes it okay.
It seems like this need for a weapon is fuelled by paranoia and insecurity, trully, that is what all of this boils down to. It has nothing to do with the 'threat' of giving up the right to own a firearm.
I am sick to the back teeth of people going on about 'protecting' their wife and kids. Excuses excuses.
The point has been raised so many times and you are blinkered to it - remove the guns and the fatalities will drop. You can't get SIMPLER than that.
P.S. Soldiers in theatre are now using new equipment, and this has recently been raised / confirmed in our parliament. Yes it was a problem, but has been dealt with. The British Army are still the best equipped in the world, and we don't shoot our allies as often as others I could mention.

I love this post, and IMHO I think the first few reponses to the OP should READ and THINK about the above quotation.
I will also remind you, there have actually been less deaths in the UK through the mis-use of firearms than in the US.
Think - Free your mind.

I live in the heart of junky city, so yes! I do not want my neighbours to own a gun. In fact, I want to make it as difficult as possible for them to get their hands on one. Which they could do on the black market - but no sign of guns in the neighbourhood yet, and trust me, you get to know who is doing what in no time in ths town.
I can handle one of my neighbours when confronted with a blade, but I don't have a chance when I'm confronted with a gun. My chance of survival is less probable.
You are obsessed with guns in the states - that is the impression we Europeans are under, and everytime we hear a story about some crazed student killing innocent people on campus, it adds more substance to the argument.
Judging by some of the attitudes towards gun ownership am reading, well, what's the point. Go ahead and build Fort Knox, I hope you feel much safer from the big bad world that's out there.
Oh, and I'd rather watch the criminal rot in a cell for his crime than kill him. If you take a life, then serve life, or lose life (if deemed).

I forgot to say I agree with you about letting them rot in jail, the problem is they don't really rot. They get 3 square meals a day, a roof over their head, Air conditioning in the summer, heat in the winter, get to exercise in the yard, watch tv, listen to the radio, medical treatment. Personally I think they should be down on the boarder building the great wall of America from Kalifornia to Texas, but thats treating them badly. I heard stories about the days when jail was meant to be bad and in fact was a very bad experience so you are encouraged not to break the law and go to jail.
