The problem is, what happens when jubilation and excitement meet the reality of the situation and Obama can't deliver on people's unrealistic expectations?

I voted for Obama, however I don't expect that I won't have to pay my bills because Obama is president. Thats just ridiculous. Reality will set in for people who believe this way and it will be a crushing disappointment.

Change and Hope does not equate a free ride in America.

If african americans, or any american for that matter, think that obama is going to make their car and mortgage payments disappear then they DESERVE to be disappointed.
I really hope this is not the thoughts of the general african american public. To think that just cause times are changing that you wont have to pay your bills is hilarious. Im white and have had white presidents since birth and neither me or anyone i know has had their bills mysteriously disappear. Im really at a loss trying to understand the thinking behind this.

Apparently translation is needed, because the woman never said anything about obama paying her bills, or giving her money, or anything remotely like that. She said that "this year we have barack obama". Statement of hope for her future, is how I heard it. somehow, though, the words people are hearing, and the way they're being portrayed in this thread, don't match up.
I believe these were her "EXACT" words..

"We not rich like y'all, thats one thing yall gonna have to understand, but one day, this year we will be, cause we have Barack Obama!" Care to translate for us again?

=Black folks and poor folks are going to get a chance now because he is not only worried about other rich old white men.

That is what I heard but thanks for offering us a peak inside your psyche.

I don't listen to right wing talk radio.

Just because you don't hear it doesn't mean that it is not an issue.

So where do you hear it? What communities? I want to hear it too since even thought I spend so much time with black people and poor people, I am not hearing it.

Honestly, where are you hearing it? The same places I kept hearing how George Bush could speak with God personally?

Then you should post all three so we can see how exactly the same they are. Or are you going way off topic to attack my replies to other people because you have no response for the items I addressed you with?

My impression is its going to take him a while to get things back on track, but really the way we have collectively (all of us globally) have been living needs to change; maybe Obama’s the right guy. I liked his inauguration speech, but thought his core speech was drowned out by the race thing. Its not going to be a quick fix just a fix, its going to be hard and painful for everyone but its necessary.

As a European I am pleased he is in, because he does not seem a corporate puppet or a sleazebag just an ordinary guy who realise this is not planet America but planet Earth; and if America wants to be in charge it needs to pull its act together.

Which part of " but one day, this year we will be, cause we have Barack Obama!" are you having trouble understanding? She obviously believes she will be rich either one day, no THIS year, because we now have Barack Obama.. LOL

Dude, you seem to be trying way too hard to spin this, but why??

I've NEVER been under any kind of impression that any of our presidents were going to fight for the little people. Oh to be that naive...it's ironic that lady left that for citibank though, wasn't Obama one of those leading the charge to fork over 700 billion to the banks? Yeah, Obama gives a rats ass about the average person...what a joke.

If an individual makes it to the position of president, it's NOT because we the people put him/her there, you have to grease alot of already very greasy palms to even get close. It's NOT race, religion, values, or anything even close to those things that elect presidents. Those are just the issues they use to keep little people at each others throats and not looking at the robber barrons and corrupt politicians who are shoveling OUR money back and forth amongst themselves with number games in the stock market and creating economic turmoil so they can dip into OUR tax money and say if we try and stop them our entire society will crumble. I say let it....i'm sick of this crap. Burn baby, burn.

Corrupt bastards.

Why should I waste board space posting all three of your triplicated replies? That'd be idiotic.. Just go back a page or so, and see for yourself.

I've answered all your questions, you simply don't like the answers.

First I didn’t vote in the Presidential election. I never do, it doesn’t make much difference to me who the President is or is going to be. They tend to cater to a group of people that my name never appears on the list of!

I did though visit the Library of Congress online and pulled every one of President Obama’s 124 pieces of failed legislation. As I sat reading one after another all I could say was wow! The people clamoring to elect him must have never read them. If they had they would have realized one thing. President Obama is no champion of the poor, disenfranchised or downtrodden. Not according to the attempts at legislation he wrote. He is though shrewdly adept at exploiting the poor and downtrodden. That is virtually all he has done to date is to exploit the poor and downtrodden as stepping stones from one swiftly vacated political office to the next without ever delivering on a single promise to his champions along the way, perhaps save to fight yet another day in another arena, if they can get him there, where presumable his fight would have more impact. He voted for both the Patriot and FISA Acts. If his legislative attempts are indicative of his thinking and capabilities he is even more woefully unprepared to be the President during these challenging economic times than he was a Senator.

What did the caller mean precisely by what she said? There is no telling what her true perspective is or how adept and accomplished she is at fully and accurately rendering her thoughts through communication. We can fill in the blanks the same with her as we do often when people fail to precisely communicate exactly what they mean and how they specifically came to believe it.

We might guess wrong or we might guess right, with the latter fairly inconceivable since the woman placing the call has a perspective shaped from her own guess and take on people, situations and future events.

I know that a lot of people of all colors are placing an extraordinary amount of not just hope but confidence in Barrack Obama. I think it’s dangerous and foolish. There are no quick fixes for an economy whose base has eroded as significantly as ours. Just as many leading economists believe FDR exasperated and prolonged the Great Depression with his many socialistic attempts to mandate business through excessive Government oversight and control. All economists agree it was World War II’s manufacturing boom that finally ended the depression. In other words somewhere in his third term he truly started to turn the nation around. More accurately circumstances started to turn the nation around.

The only thing that is going to restore America’s lost prosperity is a manufacturing base that creates legitimate exportable and profitable goods. What has destroyed our economy is the belief that an economy can be a virtual economy based on services and wealth management and never ending increasing profits off of speculative investment ventures.

Like any Ponzi Scheme it simply requires convincing the prospective investors to go along with it and to initially spread some of the wealth around as new investors continually enter the pool. Eventually though all the money ends up at the top of the pyramid in money for nothing schemes with each investor loosing most or all of their investment in the system.

Part of that system is based upon the near completely discredit Brenton Woods System that is not just our monetary policy but most of the world’s monetary policy as well. The belief that flat paper currency attached to and backed by nothing of real value is a system that creates value to that currency. In reality it’s a system that robs people of a life’s time worth of labor and hope and rewards them with nothing of value but the obligation to labor in perpetuity to in hopes one day actually owning the things that people borrow wheel barrels full of flat paper currency in order to obtain often out of necessity only to then like so many people now are worry night and day about how they can possible maintain that obligation in a world so thoroughly corrupt and self defeating.

The solution to any problem in a democracy lies squarely on the shoulders of its citizens. As long as citizens are willing to abdicate their role and responsibility in a functional democracy to a proxy they then leave all discretionary matters to decide and place all hope in the wisdom of those decisions you are in fact going to have what we have now in America, a never ending emotional rollercoaster full of peaks and valleys yet one that each run always ends lower on the scale of a democracy’s true potential.

The real question should be was the car the woman was calling about a GM, Ford or Chrysler product? The real truth is if you don’t buy American, demand American, and Support American products without fail and tolerating no excuse then you are/she is just as guilty as the most corrupt politician for American’s current plight.

The real truth is if you don’t buy American, demand American, and support American products no artificial stimulus in any amount is going to restore the economy to the level of prosperity when Americans did do that vital thing that a nation’s wealth and prosperity is contingent upon.

Ignorance is easy to deny, it sure can be hard to overcome though!

I just listened to that audio clip and all I have to say is..............WOW!!!
I don't know how anyone can be so ignorant. If you listened to his inaugural speech, He did make mention and elluded to how it is time for the country to start paying it's dues. I think that means for people to start paying off their debt-not the government and probably to start paying more in taxes to help pay off the current economic situation. If he was elected because a majority of people thought he was going to make them rich and give them things like houses or cars, well all I got to say is that that was or is one of the biggest con jobs of the American people!! I don't think everyone in that country is that naive, I know alot of Americans who are alot smarter than that

Now I know that a lot of Americans voted for Obama because they felt that if they elected him that all of life's problems would vannish. I voted for him after carefull research into his profile, his voting record and the way I felt he would direct this country.

I hope what I have learned about him is correct. But it certainly doesnt make me think that I won't have to pay my bills, or that I will get by on a free ride.

I work in a sleasy hotel in Detroit, last night I had a couple come in wanting a discount because Obama was elected. I asked them "Exactly why should you get a discount because Obama is president?" They couldnt answer that.

The lady in the recording is almoast as funny as the man who tried to pay his electric bill with a drawing.

Great post, couldn't have said it better. Especially the part:

"They tend to cater to a group of people that my name never appears on the list of!"

EDIT: anyway the caller, this phone call, could all be a prank anyway. We could all just be the butt of someone's joke.

You know, as I read all these replies, it comes to mind that some of you, if not most or all of you, are being ignorant. Obama just came into office and you're already saying how much of an evil man he is? That's just people these days, I guess, just using there first impressions with people, not giving them a second chance or thought. That, my fellow ATSers , is ignorance at its best. Why must politics be so great in these times?! Is it because of the economy, or the terrorist attacks? Whatever the reasons, it's just ignorance and insanity to me. I say Listen to the speeches, vote, listen to the inauguration, then have it over with. That way we don't have so much turmoil in the USA. Does anyone agree with me?(most likely not)

you are right in that aspect but most people that say things when in a situation like that actually mean what they say mostly cause of ignorance and not to sound unhopeful or anything but my experience with situations such as these people just assume that they will never have to worry about their problems when they think someone else will do it for them when people should be worried about taking care of things themselves and I know its not always easy to do things for one self due to the fact that the economy is crap but to assume that cause your presidents black and he's gonna automatically just start handing out money or help to only black people is kinda racist, ignorant and unrealistic and I also understand black folks have been putting up with white folks B.S for quite sometime and I honestly think that what has happened in the past is completely unforgivable the way white people treated black people but we've come along way too as a people and lets face it there is still racism all over the world and once we get past the fact that it don't matter what color yo skin is or where you come from that makes you human its more about your actions and how you spend your time and to attack someone that looks different than you is just insane I don't understand why people are so afraid of anything that is different than them and why its so hard to except things we don't understand and why we automatically try to destroy anything that we do don't understand before learning about it.
People all different colors are inherently insane.

Why are you wasting board space to bring it up and respond on it then? Either put up or shut up but I will not flip through pages to make you happy. If you have something to say, do it. ATS has plenty of space. If not, stop wasting board space to tell us you are not going to tell us stuff.

P.S. - saying I said something 3 times is one thing. Something that was an obvious duplicate post is another. You have been a member how long and never once had a double or triple post pop up?

Well hey, if you can not argue the point of the thread, start picking on my spelling, grammar, web errors, etc. Good show!

For posters on a website whose motto is "deny ignorance" I see an awful lot of ignorance going on. Look, most people dont want to say it for fear of sounding racist, but MANY black people in this country voted for Obama because he is black. I know a few individuals who are against most things Obama stands for, and they voted for him anyway. Because he is black. Period.

Drive through predominantly black neighborhoods, who do you see sings for? Window art? Bumper stickers? Obama of course.

How many of these people knew that he is pro-abortion? (and dont tell me he isnt. fine, he claims to be personally pro-life but actions speak louder than words. Look at his voting record). They would never support that if he was white. But it was looked over because he is black. How about the t-shirts comparing him to MLK? "The dreamer..............the dream" but in reality they are nothing alike except for having dark skin.

This phone call, real or not, just illustrates the attitude that I have PERSONALLY observed over the course of the campaign and since the election.
