Frankly this is a positive thing for a society to do. Have you ever read the book the Giver? It teaches responsibility, discipline, and focus on real world issues. The whole kids need to be kids excuse is IMO the reason our youth have degenerated into criminal behavior and drug abuse. Not to mention the rapid development of health problems as a result of such sedentary lifestyles.

You know what, it does not even matter. I got the President I wanted, and the more I find out about these programs he supports, the more I just love the guy. This will only do good things for Americas youth in our goal for a more Socialist society.

If selflessness is taught at a young age, populations are less likely to grow into a greedy, cynical, egotistical, supremacist, apathetic state of mind, kind of like many today.

I support this initiative.

There are many cultures where the youth of their society participate in years of civil service, they are not all out teaching the conquering the world and genocides of peoples. Please don't take things out of context.

I see this as a positive thing.

Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

For petes sake it's a few jumping jacks every day and a few weeks of picking up trash along side the highway.

Paying taxes isn't enough, now you should work for free too. It won't just include kids either. This goes through highschool, and even college. Why do you think Obama, Biden, and Michelle were all volunteering two days before inauguration. This is going to go through and of course the msm will unite in saying it will be a good thing. But then mandatory or *cough* volunteer military for a year, or hell why not three would be a good thing too right?

BTW its 50 hours a month. Have fun picking up trash on the side of the road kids.

Besides the online database of volunteer opportunities, Obama also proposed more than tripling the AmeriCorps positions to allow the program to focus on education, clean energy, veterans, healthcare and homeland security, The Hill reported. Obama's plan also would double the size of the Peace Corps, put in place a program that boosts public diplomacy and get students to volunteer their time to community service.

just about every country has 12-24 months of miilitary service at the age of 18...
Sweden comes to mind which is very peaceable progressive, and a pretty great place to be..

Israel does the same but they are a bit more "ready to fight first' rather than making for responsible citizenry...

this program can go either way...i feel it would lean towards the Swedish model, and that's a good thing

This thread is proof that our Constitution is worth the cigarette paper around the tobacco that I smoke.

- Every Country does this!

- It will make our children better!

- This is great!

- Rahm Emanuel? Who is he?... anyway if Obama trusts him... I TRUST HIM regardless if he puts Israel before America.

- The Government needs to put our kids to work so they can appreciate the things that America gave them.

Fools.

Isn't community service that thing you do when you break the law, but there isn't any room in the prison for people who commit minor offenses?

People should be asking themselves what they did wrong, that they are being press ganged into community service for. And should be asking the government, what a civillian defense force is supposed to be used for, when you already have the national guard and the police force.

People are paid to pick up litter and scrub off graffiti, dont do this for free. Better yet, force criminals to do it, that was the old idea.

This is cooking the books people, I've seen this happen in the UK. Everyone who is doing this stuff is counted statistically as being employed, this is so your president can make the false claim that unemployment is down under his watchful eye.

Ha! I'd love to see them make me pick up trash for 50 hours a month for free.

i'm 18 and live on my own. Pretty hard to do without your government making you work for free!

I agree, Sweden does a lot of stuff right. But that's because Sweden is Sweden, it's country with an entirely different mindset, so things can work differently there. It doesn't make sense, that just because something works in Sweden, you can copy and paste it to another country and it works.

If you look at the driving laws in was it Germany? I think they don't have any speed restrictions, but they have hardly any car accidents, if you applied this system to UK or the US, it would result in many more car accidents.

Also I think in Sweden you're allowed to carry a knife on your person, yet there isn't a problem with knife crime over there.

Different strokes for different folks, Sweden is a great place to live, it's not because of their government but because of their relaxed national attitude. Being the government for such an easy going country as Sweden must be a pleasure.

Sweden does it right because they have a much smaller population and there for a much more open Government that is much more representative of the good of the common man there.

It is harder to get away with corruption. You can't become a needle in a haystack nearly as easy.

"This is great!" "This is a positive thing" "I support this" etc.

Whatever happened to America being the land of the free? What's with all this mention of other countries doing it as a justification? I thought you guys took pride in being the most free country serving as an example to others. So why then should you adopt questionable customs of other small countries that end up being relatively insignificant on a world scale when compared to the power America has?

Take pride in having the option to have fat lazy children, I say. Better than being forced into anything, right?

As it is, my children barely have enough time to keep up with their homework, chores and other school activities, such as sports and band. This is crazy talk!

Problem is that some parents are diong a horrible job raising their kids so the govt. has to take over. Your right though it is the parent's job to "moraly raise a child" but what of all the children whose parents possess no morals whatsoever?

Such is the cost of living in a free country. People are allowed to raise their children however they wish. End of story.

Social services.

Government's job is policy. Public initiatives are the work of charity, youth groups, you name it, there's a public volunteer force already for it.

Yea... and we have CPS to make sure that things don't get too crazy so it's all good...

Now with that said... I'll be teaching my children that 9-11 was a lie because it's a free country.

I really hate this idea. I don't like forcing kids to do military service either. It's a Vol. Military, not a you are going weather you want to or not Military. I serve but, I don't want some 18,19 or 20 yr old next to me in combat that did not joined on a willing basis.
