Derren uses a certain amount of NLP but he is also very good at spotting the people who he can influence and read very very easily,

Take for example the Russian roulette he played on himself with the help of the easily read person who loaded the gun, he chose this guy out of a fairly large amount of people, to get rid of the one's he could not read so well, still impressive but he had found his sheep so to speak. i myself don't think he uses stooges.

This is my favourite Derren Brown trick, it scares the pants off me when I think what advertisers are putting in our swedes. The biggest worry for me is that, he's showing us how it's done but there seems very little we can do to stop it.

Here is an interesting insight from Derren himself...Cold reading..psychics et al.
he is speaking to Richard Dawkins, and the interview is taken from the series "The Enemies of Reason.".

Enjoy, I'll post the first part... the rest are on the right of the video...

Very revealing interview indeed

I saw that and it was very easy to see how he chose the person, he even made it fairly obvious which chamber in the gun he wanted the guy to put it in (I think it was 5). In fact it was so obvious which chamber he wanted it in I thought he may as well just say it out loud.

He did another show where he drew an image and someone in another room had to draw something while listening to him talking, and they both got roughly the same shape (like a circle with a cross drawn through it).

He even went to the dog track and got the cashiers paying out in full on losing tickets!

So I get how he does the suggestion thing and, whilst it's clever, I can see how it works.

However, being blindfolded and telling someone exact details from their life, never mind what they're thinking, with a 100% success rate and all they've said is "Hello"......that's really got me.

What interests me is the possibility that DB could have actually developed his intuitive powers through simple techniques to a point that he's started operating on that kind of level without really understanding it, perhaps even being in a state of denial about the reality of what he accomplishes.

A few friends and i have also came to this conclusion. He is very talented in nlp, suggestion, mentalism, hypnosis etc but he is using his brain on a higher level than most people can, even people trained in these fields.

Maybe through the techniques he uses and the spiritual arts other people practice you come to the same level of developement. Im certain that he is working with something higher, just a different case prooving it, without a confession. He could easily be in denial or knows and does not want to tell, after all he is a showman and it will affect the market he targets, or perhaps not, he could just trick us into watching him

Peace

Just to clarify a couple of things that have been mentioned.

I have seen D Brown live twice, and no you are not asked any personal information when booking tickets such as DOB, so information does not come from there. No one 'talks' to you before the show, no one 'briefs' you.

The Something Wicked show has a large part of it 'set up' but the 'set up reveal' is part of the show.

I also saw the show shown on C4 live, and it was staggaring when you were there live. I dont have a clue how its done, but I dont believe that there are stooges. One of the people he spoke to in the audience at the show I was at was someone I knew, who was totally freaked out at how he seemed to know things that it would have been impossible for him to know.

There was one thing that was obviously set up though, and that was the bit when he picked up one of the question cards and said that it was from a young boy who had written something stupid on it. A random woman in the audience opened it and it had the word c0ck written on it. He did exactly the same thing at the show I was at (I wasnt at the one that was filmed), so that part is obviously for show and I would guess that the envelope with the card saying that was palmed by him and did not come out of the bowl on the stage.

My thoughts exactly. NLP, etc., he seems to be very well adept to.
Take the psychic / medium aspect.
Although DB insists mediums are fakes - unless one is born conversing with the other side OR higher vibration, energy/universal mind or intelligence, etc (call it what you will ) , most people develop this talent via symbols.

So this is firstly a visual thing (3rd eye of course).
If you could take any aspects of spiritualism/occult etc around the world - the 3rd eye is almost everywhere isn't it. Even on dollar bills.

DB often uses the NLP/hypnosos imagery techniques with people. Mediumship/psychic ability is much the same.

So whether he learned to deliberately or not I think he can flash up imagery in the mind; and therefore is (perhaps unintentionally) performing mediumship, NLP, etc.

The transfer of said imagery into a feeling/understanding-type message is down to the individual. It is what is developed.

In my opinion
