Hidden harm of google searches

www.theaustralian.news.com.au

PERFORMING two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate a similar amount of carbon dioxide to boiling the kettle for a cup of tea.
While millions of people tap into Google without a thought for the environment, a typical search generates about 7g of carbon dioxide. Boiling a kettle generates about 15g

Snip
"Google operates huge data centres around the world that consume a great deal of power.”

ATSers get off Google immediately you are causing too much carbon dioxide.

Banks of servers storing billions of web pages require power both to run and cool them but Google says it is in the forefront of green computing.

I was wondering how many searches ATSers were doing in any say 1 hour? I would perhaps do a couple of dozen depending wither there was much activity on ATS. What I mean to say is if here is interesting stuff happening here I don't go searching but when it’s boring I’m off.

Moral of he story stay on ATS – I think

'ATSers get off Google immediately you are causing too much carbon dioxide.'

Sigh when will this insanity end...............we have no control over the environment and how it changes.

Any data centre uses massive amounts of power so it doesn't matter what search engine you use unless they openly admit to using renewable energy.

Seriously man - is the next thing you are going to say "ATSers get of Youtube immediately, watching each video uses XXX carbon blah blah"

Just being alive and eating food and living is a strain on the environment. Probably the most effective thing you can do is sign that initiative of people who have decided not to have children as to slow down the overpopulation of the Earth. Or better than that, commit harikiri.

Less people = less carbon emissions

The OP can't be seriously regurgitating this blatant propaganda!? This is beyond ridiculous.

I think it's a scam!

Take a look at the site that's linked to in that article:
www.co2stats.com...

CO2Stats is the only service that automatically calculates your website's total energy consumption, helps to make it more energy efficient, and then purchases audited renewable energy from wind and solar farms to neutralize its carbon footprint - all for a flat, affordable monthly fee.

What a CROCK!!

Now let me figure this out… It took perhaps 4 searches so what’s that 15g of CO2. Oh, then I forgot this guys name (Alex Wissner-Gross, a Harvard University physicist) who started it all off so that was another search (3.5g) all because you asked me that question.. Phew where will it all end.

Some of us couldn't tell if you had lost your mind

Most people will look back at an article such as this in about a decade and laugh our collective behinds off at how stupid the Gore movement was.

Come on get a grip guys and gals you are all getting a little too serious. If no one used a server to search the same amount of power will be still be consumed – almost anyway.

I hope that will be the case.

If it isn't, it is because the Carbon Cult will be in charge.

Sadly, that's a far cry from saying that we don't have an effect.

So I wonder when I will get my carbon tax bill for all the internet searches I perform. Way to keep people from driving on the information highway.

/sigh

Just wanted to add this.

www.complang.tuwien.ac.at...

clock idle load 1 load 2 load 3 load 4
2000MHz 283W 290W 297W 305W 311W
2333MHz 284W 296W 309W 317W 326W
2666MHz 285W 305W 324W 335W 347W
3000MHz 286W 313W 340W 354W 368W

Its gathered data, showing Watt usage of diffrent PC/Server Setups under Idle, and under load.

Cool As soon as CO2Stats can show me where the exhaust is on a web site I'll be sure to install a Cadillac converter and muffler on mine....

OH And I promise to switch to bio-fuels to power all my software from now on.

OK back to loony land I go.

Lol, if this isn’t the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard in my life then I don’t know what is.

Man cannot change the climate and neither can websites! We are all just part of a by NATURAL cycle

The way some people are crying wolf over carbon footprints you'd think they want us all to just quit doing what we do and move into holes in the ground.
WAIT!!!! I think thats what Algorer and the elites DO want us to do!!!! Yup, then only they will be able to inhabit the earth and do what they want!! We're all just BOZO's on this bus!!!
