Looks like a building got destroyed fairly recently. At least it looks that way. It's smoking but I can't tell if the deformed look is just how the building is or if it's damaged.

Anyone know the official legalities of using White Phosphorus?

[edit on 9-1-2009 by breakingdradles]

Unfortunately it is not illegal because it "can" be used as a smoke screen. So long as it is used for THAT purpose, its "ok".

It is a very effective smoke screen agent. Of course they don't bother to tell that ANYONE standing underneath that junk when it falls is going to get some nasty if not lethal burns. If the burns don't kill them, the smoke inhalation sure will.

Here is a shot of other Willy Pete shells being fired in Gaza earlier.

Here is an external quote from Times Online regarding WP.

The Geneva Treaty of 1980 stipulates that white phosphorus should not be used as a weapon of war in civilian areas, but there is no blanket ban under international law on its use as a smokescreen or for illumination. However, Charles Heyman, a military expert and former major in the British Army, said: “If white phosphorus was deliberately fired at a crowd of people someone would end up in The Hague. White phosphorus is also a terror weapon. The descending blobs of phosphorus will burn when in contact with skin.”

I'm guessing it is not down for anyone else right now?

Geez, I turned it off to tend to family crap, and the next thing I know can't get it up again.

But I am guessing there are huge ethical implications to them dropping so much white phosphorous over civilians like that?

Obvious troll is obvious. Just ignore him.

Are you guys sure that those smoke plumes are white phosphurous? If so, what makes you think that any warring nations have problems using them? They're already bombing the city.

It keeps freezing up for me (the video portion). I'll probably check it again when I get up (its 1am EST here).

As far as ethical implications... Israel does not admit to using WP. It has only stated that they are using munitions allowed under international law.

Now I don't believe they need a smoke screen in an urban situation. On an open battlefield, sure, I could see the need for a screen operation. Its also not night time... so there is no need to use WP as a flare type device. So their ONLY reason for using it right now is collateral damage.

They have switched to an on-the-streets reporter. A translator would be helpful right about now. This should be good.

"collateral damage".

That is so sad, when using human lives for such a goal.

Well, is it just me then or is it like an 'interview' setting, now?? But not? I am confused. Wonder if I connected to the network wrong this time.

So far I've understood "israel".

A translator would be nice. Notice the group of kids joking around behind the camera? Is there even a war going on?

Of course he knows, his associate is holding the cam.

Surely he knows that he is broadcasting to the world. He is a reporter with a fantastic live web stream.

He all of a sudden came on out of no where and stood around for 5 minutes seemingly waiting for a que. Just as now the interview is over but the camera angle is still on him.

He stood like this staring into the camera and waiting...
