I could have missed it, but I looked and came up empty.
Information on all the button options and what they do.
Like Freind, Foe, Ignore, stars . . . . etc.

I've been here for a short time now. Already, some people are chronically replying One liners to me like: "You're wrong!" or just being idiots.
I wish to ignore them, but what does Ignore do?

Some have a great point of view and are knowledgable. I "might" click that Friend button. What does that mean?

Stars, as in give a poster a Star. That for the "poster" or for what they had posted in that thread? I also noticed the poster can give themself a star. That is supposed to be like that?

Thanks in advance for a "link" to explain this or a simple explanation with regard to them.

If you click the ignore button under someone's avatar, their posts will be invisible to you. You won't see them.

Friends and foes are for your profile.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

In your profile you'll see all your foes and friends, and you can click their names to see their profiles. It really doesn't mean anything, just for fun I guess.

Stars are for if you think a post is good enough to deserve it. Again, it doesn't really mean anything, it doesn't give the poster anything, it's just a way of saying you thought the post was good. And people can't star their own posts.

Be careful with the "ignore" button......sometimes seeing what someone posts can have advantages.

And don't forget to Flag and Star those threads and posts you feel merit it. Of course, not just those on your "friends" list.

I think people need to do that more often. I have noticed some amazing, well-thought-out posts and threads lately with zero recognition from ATS members. Even if someone makes a point counter to mine, if I think it is well made and compelling, I star it.

Right on.

Seems people don't care about so many of the interesting and informative things round here and would prefer to just ask questions about rediculous subjects and pay attention only to the main stories.

I've even been applauded on a thread with no replies before! lol

Is diversion part of the plot?

Friends help point eachother in the right direction sometimes and a star or flag is often deserved even in the darkest corners of ATS and BTS.

Here's one I posted that's had NO interest yet....Atheist bus ads roll in London today: massive success

I ignore nobody and have an empty "foe" list, I'd like it to stay that way.

Cheers....nerb

I think some members may not realize that you can access the next few pages of posts, not just the front page. It's important to know because the other half of the world is awake and having interesting conversations while you are asleep.

See this is a misconception of the purpose of Respected Foe. It wasn't designed to be someone you disagree with, I've racked up a bunch on that premise
It's about finding someone you can debate with and respect them for their decorum(whatever you want to call it) and ability. Respected foe is an honor imo.

I haven't been here all that long, but I don't agree with an ignore function.

I don't see the need for one. If I can't read everyone's posts and continue my discussion regardless of what someone says, I shouldn't be arguing my point, imo... Trolls are easily defeated. I don't need to ignore them.

I also haven't ever put anyone on my "foe's" list. In fact, I would never give anyone the satisfaction of letting them realize that they are getting under my skin. Instead, I'll take their argument head on. If I make a mistake, I'll admit it, and I'll star their post. Then in the next thread, I may side with them on THEIR argument. I like to discuss the topics, not debate the people.

Anyhow, my reply to KosmicJack... I agree with what you said when people need to flag and star the posts on quality, not popularity. Intellectual honesty is ALWAYS a good thing.

And this is another subject I have brought to this forum in the past. Another example of intellectual dishonesty is the fact that DimensionalDetective (forgive me dude, I'm calling a spade a spade here and you probably didn't do it intentionally) posted a topic that was two days old and had already been posted in the boards two days previous... Now it isn't his fault that the ORIGINAL "original post" didn't get any play, but when he was called on it, NOBODY stepped in to mediate it. Why? Because he has over one million points and the ORIGINAL poster doesn't. That's why.

I wonder why DD didn't ask people on his thread to move their discussion to the original thread? I'll leave you to speculate. Surely he doesn't NEED the attention, does he?
And from my perspective, he would have gained TREMENDOUS respect points if he WOULD HAVE asked people, himself, to move their discussion to the original thread and asked a moderator to shut his down... I would have stood out of my chair and applauded for REAL if he had.

I understand what you are saying when you emphasize "respected" foe, but why do they need be a foe?

Do you ALWAYS disagree with those people? Probably not... So they are only Part Time foes?
I don't understand.

You bring an interesting question to mind....

In member profiles, does "I am a respected foe of" show up the same as "I am a friend of"?

I think this could also be misconstrued by some people into thinking you made them an enemy. Not good for the boards imo.

A good reason not to have any kind of foe imo.

From Dictionary.com Foe : a person who feels enmity, hatred, or malice toward another; enemy: a bitter foe.

I imagine "foe" and "respected" don't go together very well in many peoples minds.

I understand your point though my respected friend.

I think this attitude comes from the Debate Forum. We don't often
get into a pedantic mind frame. You know, the pro/con crap that goes on a lot lately?

You can have an opposing view, treat each other as they should be, learn something and teach something. That's a "Respected" foe.

I have to agree.

I am two peoples lists, and both I've argued with and dealt with.
I was not bothered but they obviously had issues and "listed" me.

I know i am not their respected foe.
I have people on my friends list, I have debated or had words with but i respect their opinions and their decorum... so they make it on my good list.

Having "foes" is not good, imo.

Once again, I understand what you're saying. Completely, and I'm not trying to debate the issue. But I simply don't see it that way.
I guess the reason I don't is because I just don't view people who challenge me on my views as foes. Like I said, next time around I may agree with them completely...
So, FOR ME, I don't see a need for a foe function. Not that I'm asking anyone to remove it, I was just adding my two cents.

Well now you are treading into the always dicey area of "Breaking News". Apparently a thread can be both "breaking" and posted in the correct, applicable forum. IMO, If I read it on a news aggregate site or see it on a cable news channel, it done broke...

You get no arguments from me, in fact, I'd star you if I could.

As for foes, I guess you never met JediMiller.
But yeah, I don't even remember any back and forth with those who have made me their "foe". On a side note, I was one tantrum away from making FlyersFan my foe and now we shoot the occasional u2u to each other. She's cool in a much younger, female Pat Buchanan sort of way.
She calls it as she sees it, damn the critics or the party line. I like that.
