politicians supporting the "Isreali invasion of Gaza"

is it a good idea if mayors of big cities like New York and Los Angeles say they support Isreal. This isn't an American war so they shouldn't have an opinion, but then again were in a "war on terrorism" which pretty much means the enemy is virtually invisible and can strike anywhere. With such a heated situation(with heated opinions) thousands of miles away do thier opinions matter to the people of their city(i guess protesters) or to someone like a "terrorist".?
