A friend of mine, who is heavily into conspiracy theories was spending increasing amounts of time on the internet researching various issues such as 9/11 and JFK. Within a space of 18months he had got through 3 p/cs which had all gone inexplicably wrong.

I was wondering if any other ATS had similar events happen to them?

Well I've never had anything like that happen to me...

Then again I do use a federal government computer, working for the Australian weather bureau...hmmmmm

in what way have they gone wrong.....PC's do crash and I dont see anything odd about it unless you give specifics....could be a faulty motherboard, connectors, memory....has he changed the whole PC three times or just certain parts....

Honestly, I had one computer for ten years. An eternity for computers right? Then after delving much deeper into conspiracies and visiting many sites, forums and blogs, I went through two in one year.

I'm just saying...

I don't know who your friend is, but if he was anyone, I'm positive you would have said his name.

Given that he is no one well known, "the government" would not bother with him. They would not waste their time disrupting his research. They focus on threats to themselves. I'm not sure what he believes, but if he believes he's a threat, he's delusional.

I have been researching "conspiracies" and have been heavily involved with them for about five years now and I have had no computer problems. Perhaps your friend simply doesn't know how to take care of a computer.

No, its not just parts of the pc, the whole system has gone down, to an extent where it is irrepairable. He has had to buy a new pc each and every time.

I do some rather extensive research on rather conspicuous topics.
I have never had a problem.
Did he try a MAC?

Im not sure how much your friend knows about computers and dont want to comment on his PC skills but maybe he needs a lesson in looking after PC's.....if he's gone to the extent of purchasing new PC's then sounds like he may have some kind of power spike and its blowing his power supply which may cause other internal damage to the PC...maybe worth looking into....does he have lots of power going into lots of double sockets etc....

I know some of my relatives are like train wreaks with an internet connection. I get their computer running all nice and zippy, recommend the right apps to use to keep it that way and to stop bleeding downloading everything they are told to do (and many many more tips, but I have to keep it simple
)

Any who, give it a month and the computer almost grinds to a halt, and they have forgotten every single thing I have said. All I know is I'm a heavy net user... And I even run Vista
(for my sins!) But I can manage to keep a reactively low spec machine running way faster than my relatives!

So to sum up, my I suggest you friend modify's his internet habbits... May I even go so far as to mention the 'sites of a less reputable nature'... Those windows media player extra codecs have a lot to answer for

Feh. Next time he/she gets a computer, have them build it with Ubuntu or with no OS at all, and then load Ubuntu yourself. You can get free disks from the official site:

Linky!

Linux > OSX > Hobo Urine > Windows.

Id say its probably the sites he's getting his research from that's doing it.

I used to to just google something, say UFO then go an unknown site and follow link after link and watch videos. But I was getting bombarded by adware and the like and even the odd trojan. The best thing to do is dont use sites you dont trust.

First off let me preface my comments by saying I have nothing against the OP.

Folks......take a deep breath, sit back for a minute and think hard about what your saying. Do you honestly believe that any outside forces would take the time to actively target and trash some Internet users PC based on their google wanderings or the like? You really do give yourselves far more credit than is deserved. Would it not make more sense to target the ISP where your data flows. Would it not make more sense to target individuals who first post material rather than those who simply view it?

I would bet hard earned money that 100% of these cases are a result of either poor hardware or just plain incompetence.

This isn't above top secret, this is above top stupid.

I didn't say it was targeted - it's blanketed, well know that say porn sites for example are riddled with mal ware - plenty of less than reputable sites out there... And the more gullible the net user, the more hoops they will jump through in terms of clicking on links - and those people are perfect for having data stolen. of for their computers to be used as zombies for things like denyal of service attacks. Hell you could literally be acting as a proxy for some dirty peado ring and never know it - some people just accept that their computer slows dramatically cos they don't know any better.

I am a computer technician and I would guess he is not keeping his computers maintained properly. If he has it in a hot room with high humidity that will cause electronics to fail.
All computer parts fail eventually. Mostly you see power supplies fail. It's a simple fix just buy a new one and the computer works again.
I would also agree with the other poster that he may have voltage spikes that could cause them to fail. I would suggest buy a good UPS unit and that would help with that problem as well.
I don't think it's the powers that be are trying to stop him from finding out the truth.

This sounds exactly like what probably happened. Nothing to do with any conspiracy sites.
