Democracy returns in Bangladesh

Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina has been sworn in for a second stint as prime minister of Bangladesh.

The move ends two years of army-backed rule, declared after violent protests over election rigging claims in 2006.

The Awami League won a landslide in elections last week, marking a major turnaround in its leader's fortunes.

Sheikh Hasina and her rival Khaleda Zia - both former prime ministers - were jailed for suspected corruption but released to contest the vote.

this is a kick in the face of people who scream a majority Muslim country cant be a democracracy ,


Officials say that they expect the overall turnout could be as high as 75%.

43% of voters who are illiterate. Their thumbs were also marked to stop them voting twice.



Not only did it have a good turn out but even those that are illiterate turned out to vote.
