Excellent! I was very shocked when I read the opening title on the board, not many threads have raised such emotion in me just from an opening line, I though WHAT! HOW can this be allowed, I was actually outraged...ATS did not deserve this treatment.... then I scrolled down and smiled.

Certainly makes you think...thanks.

I have to say this is a fascinating thread in the psychological sense.

This is also something we can all relate to just being ATS members. How many times have we made a post that someone completely misconstrued, labeled offensive, or automatically assumed we had the worst of intentions when submitting our post?

How many times have we been misjudged in real life by our appearance or body language? How many times has an act of kindness been turned around on the one trying to spread kindness?

How many times have we been guilty of reading into something totally harmless and took it negatively?

Good thread. It makes us think.

Thank you for your reply AshleyD very well said.

It is a shame that we so often rely on our perception to judge others without giving them a fair chance to show us who they really are.

Got me

Thanks for the post. I share in the guilt you have pointed out. This should be required reading for new members. Thanks again.

From emotionally outraged to smilling in what I would bet was less than twenty seconds.

Thanks for the reply

C' mon ATSers, maybe this place really is losing its edge.

So you are saying that you clicked on thsi thread under the impression that it was going to be a compliment? You are saying that you read the topic which is "To all BLEEPING ATSers BLEEP YOU!!!" and you thought it was a compliment?

Pardon me for saying, but I dont believe you. Based on the title alone you had no reason to believe it was anything but an insult.

Im not trying to call you out as a liar ( Im really not) I just have trouble buying that you thought it anything but an insult. But if I am wrong ( that has happened once before, but only once
) I do apologise.

peace my friend.

I believe him. If that thread had been an actual insult, it wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes before it was deleted.

I knew it was a joke or a kissup as soon as I saw the title. Believe me or not.

Thank you for this thread.

I have been working on a research project and this might just have helped me a bit.

BTW the project is: " What is the validity of religious texts(Bible & Qur'an)? Who wrote them, when and why? What makes them valid or not valid as communication from a supreme being?"

It might just be that the validity is not with the material itself but with how the reader perceives it thus making it valid for some and not for others

Thanks again
S&F

Good luck with your project.

It makes me wonder if mis-perception sometimes leads to conflct.

A friend of mine was using my garage to work on his truck he assured me he would have the truck out of the garage at a certain time.

When he ran far past the time he said he would have the truck out of the garage I yelled across the garage at him and said "get the truck out of here"

He seemed a bit upset and I later learned that he had heard what I said as "get the (replace the "TR" in truck with an "F") out of here"

You are absolutely right.

Its like this if Iran readys their naval forces or Air forces because of something that Russia has done and we don't know of this incident which has caused these increased military actions then we(the united states and other country's participating in this current war) are gonna do the same because we are not on good terms with Iran. Now because we have increased our military alertness they are gonna look toward us and say well they must know of the incident that has happened between us and Russia so they are gonna try and attack us when we are weak and are preoccupied with Russia. This could cause them to get agitated and try to attack us before we can attack them. This would concrete our (USA and such) thinking that they were preparing to attack us. All this because of mis-perception. Perception has a great impact on the way we see everything. Not meaning to state the obvious lol.

all this was hypothetical by the way

We can only hope that TPTB take a few deep breaths before they react to what they perceive.

I admit that I really don't hit this area, just generally not my thing.

I only read it because it was on top of the main page.

I read it (not see what area it was from).

I fell for it hook line and sinker, I bet 95% or more were also, even if they won't admit it.

I did read and continued to the bottom, where i was relieved ( there was a rash of ATS bashing threads for a bit).

Star and a flag for you.

All I can say is...

Nihil est incertius vulgo, nihil obscurius voluntate hominum, nihil fallacius ratione tota comitiorum.

or...

Nothing is more unpredictable than the mob, nothing more obscure than public opinion, nothing more deceptive than the whole political system.

Beautiful lesson on our tunnel vision!! Though we be open minded we tend to slip. Thanks for the reminder. Perception is everything!

The main thing that gave away this thread for me before reading it was the amount of posts it already had by the time I saw it. I figured if it was as it seemed, the mods would have seen it and killed or closed it by the time I was able to see it.

I'm glad I read the whole thing. It definitely makes a good point about perception.

Calm down, I'm not trying to act cool. I have been fooled before, just wasn't this time.

I would calm down but I wasnt upset in the first place.

After I read the Bleeped part or most of it. I was scrolling down wholly expecting to find an explanation for the thread title etc. You seriously thought someone went off on ATS of all places?

Yes I seriously thought that untill I read the rest of the thread. I have seen people do that before and I will no doubt see it again. So its not like my first reaction was groundless.

In fact I almost didn't click on this thread because I suspected it was someone trying to be clever.

Very impressive. You do seem to be the only one who caught on. :uo:

I am as surprised at your disbelief as you seem to be at my level of perception.

Well, while I am not sure just what your level of perception is, I usually do percieve things correctly. Not this time though, atleast not at first.

No worries though.

Right on, my dear friend. Let me just say again, I have been wrong before and I no doubt will be wrong again. As I did earlier I do apologise for doubting you. I truly didnt mean to call you a liar or anything like that. Thanks for bearing with me buddy.

Peace.

Good thread

I like that it showed just how fast people will click that "Reply" button before reading the entire post. Then when they're called out on it, they come back trying to say they did read the entire thing when it's very clear that they didn't.

The amount of people who did that isn't really surprising to me

The way "BLEEP" was used should have told these people that the post might not be what they thought it was about or else it would have said *SNIP*. How often do you see people post "BLEEP" on the internet to replace a cuss word? They'll usually just straight out type it or use numbers instead of letters to get around it.
