As world leaders called for restraint, Israel launched a new wave of air strikes on Gaza this morning, blasting a TV station and a mosque in the early hours.
Israel's defence minister Ehud Barak rejected calls from the United Nations and the European Union for a truce during a US television interview.
Speaking to Fox News he said: "For us to be asked to have a ceasefire with Hamas is like asking you to have a ceasefire with al Qaeda. It's something we cannot really accept."
