Given that in the above image there are a lot of quakes directly under the lake the last one only 100 meters down what is perfered?

1. Quake opens a seam for hot gases lava to push up into the lake.
or
2. quake opens a seam and the water seeps deep into the ground.

Which is better in this region deep or shallow quakes?

On the page I linked it's still marked as 2.8*, but it hasn't been manually reviewed yet. By the way, seismologists are now starting to add "older" earthquakes too to the page.

* Note: despite the little difference in numbers a 2.8 magnitude EQ is about 80% the size of a 2.9 magnitude one.

Wow! Good am all- at least for me.
Go to sleep for a while ...
wake up, checked last 10 pages
Find pulsating yellow circles at Yellowstone,
and talk of Nuking it as aprevenitive measure,
That would be like dropping a sharp pin on to a balloon!
..Side note
Trueusername.. your a trooper
And mrsdudara , once again ,great graph
When I checked out you stated large sounds
That was Sumatra area again and New Zealand Right?

Ok, here we go.

These are the harmonics off the Mary Lake seismographs. They can be found here, Mary Lake, December 29 . Though you can see the same harmonic tremor readings on quite a few of the stations December 27th on.

Here are the harmonics off Mt. Rainier. Rainiers started before St. Helens erupted in 04. After the eruption it calmed a bit, then it built up to what you see here. It continued to look like that until the big quake Dec. 26 of 04. Then it built back up before every Indonesian quake since. Stopping after the quakes.

That pic is thanks to Hellmutt back in this thread Mount St. Helens Dome Splits

St. Helens was similar back in October of 04, it is what brought me to ATS. Unfortunatly, the recordings were not saved and posted, like this one that Hellmutt did.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, I know there is a big difference between levels on the scale, but I've never really been too sure on the figures. I'm not a good mathematician and I've seen the equations used

I did note that EIDS was stating a depth of about 0.3km though, without going back to chech I'm not sure if we've had any of this size at such a shallow depth yet. I don't think we did, but I could be wrong.

Morning all!
Well, Casper is still here

Just DL'ed the GEE program, am anxious to install and monitor.

All of this great scientific data aside, my gut tells me to fill the gas tanks and load up the truck.

I've learned over the years to trust my gut. It warned me of trouble before it happened many years ago. I had a big discussion with my ex about why we in America thought we were safe, when Israel was seeing all of the suicide bombings. I said "Just you wait". It wasn't 2 months later that OK City went boom. She got a great big "I told you so". I can guarantee that on 9/11 she was again thinking "That a-hole was right".
Many of us don't listen to these 'gut feelings', 'premonitions', whatever you want to call them. Going with our first instinct is tough because our minds get in the way and try to rationalize everything into our comfortable little bubble.

Now, when the gut feeling is backed by the careful observation and dissemination of the scientific data (so skillfully done by you guys and I'm counting on you), it only solidifies the gut - and let me tell you, a solidified gut amounts to a rock in the pit of your stomach.

Looks like things are still moving North. I'm gonna let you guys (and gals) sift through the data while I take a trip to the gas station. Thanks so much for all of the time you are putting into this, it could quite possibly save my life.

eh I was commenting on what I was seeing on the Live Internet Seismic Servers But I must say Im getting a bit pissy about it. Either the same quake keeps happening over and over again, or its totaly screwed up. The time and date is up to date, but the servers keep showing the same thing over and over. Granted they move up and down, on the graph like its updating, but I swear its the same darn quake. Also find it odd that it is being picked up on ever server across the world. That usually only happens in big quakes, and this was not a big quake.

I dunno Its got me puzzled.

Ok, I see now, thanks.
Still, the ones we saw in Yellowstone these days to me seem more of chaotical nature than harmonic. Maybe they were really just because of the bad weather.

By the way, the medium EQ occurred today just before the 3.5 magnitude one has been just revised to 3.0 magnitude.

Morning Sageturkey.
The new watercooler might just be the gas pump!

Ironic

Are the mass media in the US reporting at all on this? The BBC here hasn't mentioned it at all as far as I am aware.

I wonder how many people know this is going on?

The TODAY program seems to be focused on the big ball drop in NY

sorry if someone else has posted this already.

Wouldnt it be something....if the real reason for the delay in reporting was due to the scientists watching ATS so they knew what to report based on the findings here? Yeah, far-fetched, but still a funny scenario nonetheless...

My guess would be a fraction of the population. A very small fraction.

I just heard on CNN a small mention.
A bit cutesie, not inaccurate, more of stating the question,"What's going on in Yellowstone?"
Just heard it again...two hundred or more EQ...geophysicists say it could be this or that...no one knows...better here on ATS.

ooo here's a good map usgs

note the two big quakes, Hebgen Lake back in 1959 was a 7.5 and Norris was a 6.1 back in 1975.

I doubt its going to blow, its probably just getting ready for another quake like these.

I just think it would be a lot more spectacular if it was fixing to blow.

Nice map!
EQ's seem to be along the east side of the green dotted line.
interesting...

Ether would be bad
I just hope that the magma does not come up under the lake.

That would be explosively bad.

The water would react by turning to steam. and would cause a ash fall rain at this time of year with massive mud flows.

The only thing going for this volcano is there is not a large volcanic mountain for lahar or pyroclastic flow to flow down.

In this case the lahar or pyroclastic flow would be trapped inside the caldera unlike Mount St Helens or Mount Pinatubo
