Here in the oil & gas exploration world we have first break picking programs (i have written one or two , or tried to ) , in the very best cases (best S/N) U can maybe get 98-99% success ... it gets a lot lot worse if if poor S/N

#2 it would be great to have a station right on top of Dome, but there are other stations SO close, that I doubt if anything important escapes their Vigilence (as long as they are working) .. a real time temperature monitor might be neat, though ...

#3) I'm a Canuck, so not a member of the PTB or NWO or ... , seems to me that USGS & UT are doing pretty good work , u guys should be proud of USGS, its a class act, really ...

Thanks for your quick response. It seems to me that when you click on USGS earthquake map it would be real time, so are you telling me that the information on this map is censored? I mean evaluated, before public consumption?

It says on the map, 'earthquakes within the last hour are in green'. Why even have that info if human intervention is required?

Do the stations close to the dome tell you whether it is growing or receding? You're right a temperature monitor would be awesome!

I believe USGS does a great job too. I'm just trying to figure out how to interpret their information. I've learned alot from your posts but one thing I didn't learn is what S/N is an acronym for.

Here is a really good report on the lake and dome.
It is well put together. Vent locations land and water, fault lines, sonar images, thermal images, strata and more.
Hope this helps even if you just scan through.

#3 signal is evaluated by that wonderful eye-brain signal processing unit .. trust nothing else .. not censored .. Quality Controlled ...

check the deformation page for growth or subsidence ...

i made edits on my previous post, please check ...

S/N :== signal to noise ration .. ie for example strength of a typical earthquake recorded at LKWY divided by the random energy appearing on that station (random seismic energy[cultural, wind, biological(gopher, elk),others] & instrument noise)

To me it looks a limestone patch (residue) from a feature, depending on the year you can see them all around the Pitchstone area and many others.

You know that is just government sickness.
Lets reintroduce the wolves to their natural habitat and then license them off for slaughter under the guise of animal control.
Arg .. That is not restoring a member to the ecosystem.
That is managing and controlling an enterprise for profit.
Sorry , way off topic, but really makes me angry.
We have enough to do, thanks for the info.

It's not so much that the USGS is censoring data data, though if they need a hard look at something the lines beside the chart on the left read NaaN, and the sensor seems to die for a while. The USGS/Utah U. folks have propriety data rights so if they need all the power to do things, they take it. (Or so we guess.)

Elevation is monitored by GPS and we can see the data from those stations.

I'd like to see a live 'mike' in the sensor set up so we could 'listen' for 'cultural noise' and the like live.

I could also wish for a 'plug in' to let us hear the sounds quakes make in real time or playback

Ok one more post for the day, something for ya`ll to think about.
From the IRIS site "LISS Service - a USGS defined protocol for delivering a live data feed over the internet. The USGS provides a client for this. At the IRIS DMC, data for an entire network is delivered in one connection. Data loss will occur if the connection is lost. Data latency will occur due to various reasons such as buffering, or high internet traffic. Currently, only selected networks are being served."
LKWY?.... Maybe WE are the cause of the LKWY station having data "gaps" Something shows up on it, somebody posts about it,Everybody looks ...and the station goes down.
Something to think about.

Seismic Audio for events of 19th July 2008
SEPUK_THS_Event_19_Jul_2008.pdf

An audio file of seismic events on 19th July 2008 using data recorded at the THS Seismometer (Dorchester, Dorset). Replay is speeded up by a factor of 2000 to make the seismic waves audible. P, S and Surface Waves are clearly audible from the main event against the microseismic background. The audio file covers a 24hr period. Two additional weaker events are also audible, occurring after the main event. There will be an accompanying PDF file for 19th July 2008 (when I find out how to post hyperlinked icons) showing AmaSeis analysis of the main event and Spectrogram analysis for the full 24hr period.

Keywords: audio, earthquake, mp3, spectrogram, THS

Monday, 12 January 2009 NEW YORK, NY (January 12, 2009) Speaking last night to talk show host David Letterman, Tony- and Emmy-Award winning performer Billy Crystal made a surprise prediction that the U.S. would experience a “major or minor earthquake” centered around Yellowstone National Park at the same date as the inauguration of President-Elect Barack Obama.

“I don’t know, it just came to me in your Green Room that this would happen,” the Long Island native confided to a somewhat shaken Letterman. “I don’t know the meaning of it, if any.”

I did see a similar story posted earlier, but not mentioning about The Feds charging him with anything. I guess don't yell to loud or they might hear you and do something about it. He did do some stupid stuff though in using the USGS logo.

Evening folks,

Whoa, you all know your techi talk; thanks for paying such close attention to our volcano.. I think it is worth the time and devotion considering it could turn a portion of the continental US into a wreckage unlike anything we have ever seen.
Do you think that if we all try real hard all at once we could WILL the dang thing to blow up (joking).

Anyhow, the last time Spurr blew a beltch AVO raised the level to advisory color yellow at which time I watched the webicorders daily trying to get an idea of when I needed to break out the ash gear but the activity was on/off for months before she burped - is that common? Could it be possible that due to the size of this badboy that it could take months if not years for em to warm up i.e. the past 3 years of swelling.. That what we have just witnessed is just the beg of a long seismic state before the red flags are raised.. Dont let it sneak up (boiling frog theory) please keep your eyes out there cause at the rate you are all spinning information you will know before anyone!

NAN = "Not a number" , an illegal combination of bits forming a floating point number ... ie computer is realizing that the bits it has do not form a valid number .... instrument isn't there , data stream worthless ... If I get that when programming, I have seriously F****D up the algorithm/data somehow ...

That is a carefully placed joke..."major or minor earthquake" is just a mockery of us, panic fed animals...at the same time, he is advertising Obama...drawing attention to the inaugural ceremony. During or before important events, folk legends say that natural signs appear...like lightning or comet...
In show business, and in media in general, everything goes through different agents, censors, editors...and if it is finally approved, it has it's purpose.

HI everyone! Was just sent info on this rare form of eruption. news.nationalgeographic.com...
Fascinating, but scary stuff. Like the uranium reactor theory, geogeek! Scary stuff to me, but makes some sense!
Thanks for the google tip!
Now for my rant...sheeple move along now...watch out 4 the black bags.
Boy this set up works pretty good! Hey PTB, quit giving our money to the banks! Geez! THEY HAVE ENOUGH. Then they get testy when we ask where it went? Astounding!
Yes, you screwed up with Katrina disaster, dont try to lie!
Okay, I'm back, excuse me there a moment!
Thought I better get in on all the namecallin' too! hehe - I'm kidding, easy.
Much rather be called a fear monger than a war monger though, got enough of those already in the world!
Good work all, thank you - from the people!
I appologize for being "mongery" but not for being critical or cynical for that matter.
It took college, common sense and getting screwed over enough to develop and hone this talent!
Hopefully its all some good entertainment and maybe we learn a little geoscience along the way! We are the borg collective!
P.S.

Edit to add: thanks for the link, puterman!
And thanks you guys in the know, for keepin us from blowing OUR stacks!
Couldn't resist! Keep the perspex!

This is the best article I've seen so far- it includes an official denial of harmonic tremor. The article also says that "recent earthquakes caused an eruption of volcanic dooms-day sayers to take to the internet."

Glad they aren't talking about us.

www.kulr8.com...

BILLINGS - Recent earthquake activity in Yellowstone National Park has raised concern that the quakes are a sign that the supervolcano located there is ready to erupt; bringing catastrophic damage and triggering a severe change in weather.
It is a valid concern, as Yellowstone is centered over the largest supervolcano in North America. But park scientists say there are explosions of another kind to be concerned about that are more likely to occur in our lifetime.

The ground has settled at Yellowstone Park after about 900 earthquakes occurred here between December 26 through the first week of the new year. An event referred to as an earthquake swarm.

"We've had larger swarms in the past, larger earthquakes, but the fact this is in Yellowstone Lake and it's releasing a lot of energy is very interesting to us," said Hank Heasler, park geologist.

The recent earthquake swarm caused no property damage to the nation's first park, but scientists said it could have altered some of the thousands of thermal features the park is famous for."

"We wanted to depict what was happening over time," said Cheryl Jaworowski, park geologist, pointing to a map she created hanging in her office. The map shows the northward movement the recent swarm was taking in Yellowstone Lake. Jaworowski used circles to represent the quakes, and on the map you can see how they came very close to disrupting a large thermal region.

"Might of we had a hydrothermal explosion, basically like a geyser eruption but involving a lot of dirt and rocks, could it have not caused any change," speculated Heasler. These are questions still being studied.

The recent earthquakes caused an eruption of volcanic dooms-day sayers to take to the internet. "We don't see any evidence of volcanic activity associated with this earthquake swarm."

The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory is a group of scientists, including Heasler, charged with keeping an eye on the situation. "Technology has improved greatly for the earthquake monitoring, satellite sensing of volcanic activity and we just do not see any of those indicators currently in Yellowstone," said Heasler.

The YVO streams live seismographs on its website. Heasler said this scientific data can be misinterpreted. For example, many people confused constant small pulses on a January seismograph as harmonic tremors, which are indicative of a pending volcanic eruption.

"So, part of the web excitement with all this is that people thought they were seeing harmonic tremors when actually it was just simply wind noise," said Heasler.

The earth may be settled beneath Yellowstone for now, but it is never quiet. "These features change daily, the thermal activity, the deposition of the rocks, Yellowstone is extremely dynamic," said Heasler. That is what keeps the doomsday sayers, and the millions of visitors coming back for more. "It's Mother Nature, what are you going to do," said Peter Janker, park visitor from New York.

Heasler said it would not be out of the ordinary for this swarm to pick back up again. The swarm in 1985 lasted for about three months. Scientists are still studying the cause of this latest swarm.
