yeah there seems to have been many more quakes than listed..... makes me wonder what going on... right now on the cam their waiting for OF to erupt

I realize that if this happens and it erupts that many people wouldn't survive.
Can someone tell me how can we prepare for this?
I know that the chances of survival would be very low.
Can a person stay in their home?
Would masks help at all?
Would it be wise to stock up on food and supplies?

Now we've got one for today:

A minor earthquake occurred at 12:14:49 PM (MST) on Monday, December 29, 2008.
The magnitude 3.3 event occurred 60 km (38 miles) ESE of West Yellowstone, MT.
The hypocentral depth is 2 km ( 1 mile).

edit - source updated (wrong info first time.): www.seis.utah.edu...

And now another:

A micro earthquake occurred at 12:28:55 PM (MST) on Monday, December 29, 2008.
The magnitude 2.5 event occurred 60 km (37 miles) ESE of West Yellowstone, MT.
The hypocentral depth is 0 km (0.0 miles).

edit - this one was corrected by the seismologists as well.

That would be the center of the old crater....or close.

Don't Panic

There will be an eruption, soon, in Geological Time. In the next 50,000 years (give or take 10,000) it is likely that an eruption will occur.

Will one happen in our lifetime - better odds than winning the lottery, but still very unlikely.

A swarm of small quakes may be a pressure relief (good thing) or the start of a chain of events leading to an eruption (that could be many many years away).

Thanks!
That webcam is amazing!
Is that the lake ?

I think that they are trying to not cause a panic. By the looks of it, the reason more and more are being added from yesterday is because alot more happened then they reported, and they don't want people to start to panic.

So now they are slowly adding in the ones they didn't from yesterday.

Either that or they just forgot... and I highly doubt they just "forgot" to add them.

A micro earthquake occurred at 12:37:07 PM (MST) on Monday, December 29, 2008.
The magnitude 2.0 event occurred 62 km (38 miles) ESE of West Yellowstone, MT.
The hypocentral depth is 1 km ( 1 mile).

Yellowstone is starting to make me feel like a spammer, so I'm just going to stop listing these.

Just keep checking this page, ya'll: www.seis.utah.edu...
And of course, the seismograph: www.quake.utah.edu...

How accurate is the depth? Did a 3.0 magnitude earthquake occur just below (within meters of) the bed of Yellowstone lake? I think it might be interesting to know if water level has changed from this.

EDIT: it seems like the earthquake info on the website has been reviewed and corrected. This is what is listed now for today:

2.0 2008/12/29 12:37:07 44.493N 110.366W 1.0 62 km (38 mi) ESE of West Yellowstone, MT
2.2 2008/12/29 12:28:56 44.516N 110.375W 1.6 60 km (37 mi) ESE of West Yellowstone, MT
3.3 2008/12/29 12:14:49 44.521N 110.369W 1.8 60 km (38 mi) ESE of West Yellowstone, MT

36 quakes in the last 24 hours. Seems to me the swarm is increasing. I dont really care if a swarm was caused in 1985 by magma getting thru a barrier. Thats exactly what happens before a volcano blows. Magma gets thru a barrier. The quakes are going up and down at a depth of what? 2.2 miles to around .3? I havent looked back over the history yet of the past week. Im just watching the recent increase in activity.

And yet, it's still not that many. The only reason so far this has got any attention here is because of an interesting number of magnitude 3s, normally there's one that big.

What we should do is wait for now, and see what happens in the next week or so. The next standard activity update should be in the next few days anyway, and in any case 2 days is almost no time geologically anyway.

the depth actually has been varying.
although the majority was about 1.3km
there were two quakes with a magnitude of ~3.4 down at 4.1 and 4.3 km
(that's about 3 miles)
but in general, the quakes have gone deeper ... at least that's my impression.

oh... after regarding the full map again, there even was a minor one (2.0) down at 7.2km(~4.5miles)

Why are you saying this? To me it seems that the rate is decreasing instead, as today (at least for now) there have been only three earthquakes and in a small period of time.

What's interesting anyway, is that the last three ones, from the data I see, really look like they're caused by something trying to get to the surface. If you see on the map here they're lined together, and furthermore they have a decreasing magnitude and a decreasing depth.

Again:

I just woke up lemme get coffee.

4.3 kms doesn't equal 3 miles.. not even close.

1.77km in 1mile
