Thish ish your pilot shpeaking

GUN cops swooped on a Heathrow airliner because the pilot reeked of BOOZE as he prepared to take off with 300 passengers.
Dad-of-two Michael Harr, 62 — who had been to a Christmas party the night before — was breath-tested and hauled out of the cockpit of the Boeing 777.

absolutely discusting what this man was trying to do, its hard enough trying to ride a bike while under the influence and even type this post, but fly a plane come on geezer, he could
of hit killed numerous numbers of people if that plane went down. imagine him hitting a 60,000 strong football crowd at a game and the unbearable grief that would cause shame on him man, and most of his passengers were the relatives of the mumbai attacks, come on get a grip, makes me so mad that people like this get the jobs they do in the first place. its states also he was an ex marine, which has nothing to do with the way he was, he could of been an ex off license shop keeper still makes no difference, the guys a loon come off it, surely must of been a passenger on high alert that noticed it obviously, cause of what they had just been through all they needed was a pissed up pilot bloody hell.

LOL @ "Pissed Up"...haha

Certainly wouldn't be the first time a pilot hit the sauce before taking off.

Scary stuff!

LMAO!!

On a serious note though, this should give those who ALREADY have reservations about flying more incentive to take another mode of transportation. I wonder how many crashes there have been where we never found out the pilots were juiced up prior to take-off?

Something to think about IMO.

yikes.

maybe airliners should install breathalysers for their crew.

Certainly one Xmas this pilot and his family will never forget.

Good job they "hauled" him away before they took off.

Also...says a lot for the rest of the crew on board if they didn't report him. Thank goodnes the security staff at the airport were doing their jobs properly.

How often does this happen and nobody finds out?

Compulsory breath tests for ALL crews in future....our lives in their hands. Makes sense.

Am I the only who sees the irony in a drunk guy ranting about a drunk guy?

At least, from reading the OP's comments, I assumed he was .. er .. under the influence..

Have another, I'm buying this round!

Seriously, the pilot was 62 (no doubt about to retire anyway so what a way to go!) so he remembers when pilots often drank hard and flew hard. Sometimes there wasn't much seperation between the activities.

Early piloting was always a dangerous adventure. The planes weren't very dependable, you were always flying in weather, and the navagation instruments were undependable and difficult to use. Danger and adventure attracted the kind of pilot that was comfortable in the bar room as well. WWI pilots often had a shot with breakfast before taking off and they took a flask with them to go find the Hun.

Wasn't the pilot English? It wasn't too many years ago I stopped by a civilian flying club in Brittany and pilots were sitting around sipping beer and wine and talking flying. Drinking was permitted you just weren't to be flying drunk. I don't think the definition of "drunk" had been defined yet in France.

In the earlier days of flying the bottom line was how good of a pilot you were and your blood alcohol level wasn't a factor yet.

Believe me now days you observe the 12 hrs bottle to cockpit and you don't go on board smelling like a drunk! This guy in the story found out why not.

The OP isn't trying to "lift-off" with 300 people in tow!

Not really ironic is it?

Who said we can't be happy while we inform others of the bad stuff out there?

It's called "not letting it get to you".....some of us have to keep the spirits up!

Plane WASN'T flown by a pi**head.

The pilot will probably lose his job.

The passengers will get to their destination safely.

Other pilots will be more responsible after hearing about this.

Other airport security staff will be more vigilant from now on.

It's not ALL bad news.....that deserves a beer "schlick..glug, glug!"

And I'm only driving my keyboard......cheers..

I thought this was going to be some warm & fuzzy story about Sean Connery landing a passenger jet after the pilot got food poisoning or something.

Scary stuff--at least it was nipped in the bud.

My cousin got a dui a few years back, in Virginia. The judge put a breathalyzer in his car, and if he blew over a .02 his car wouldn't start. I remember him complaining that he couldn't even start his car after taking a swig of mouthwash. Why can't/haven't they put these devices in planes? It makes perfect sense and would sort of cut these problems out at the source. I guess the pilot could get his copilot or a stewardess to blow for him, but if corruption runs that deep in the airline industry I don't want to be flying period.

I mentioned this landmark event (pilot getting busted flyin UTI) to one of my commercial pilot friends with over 10,000 hours in the commercial cockpit.

His reply: "If that pilot was 62 years old and English, he could have greased that plane on the runway blowing twice the limit!"

Translation- "the pilot could have performed very well at twice the blood alcohol limit"

Am I the only one here who doesnt care if the pilot was after a few beer the night before?
Planes fly themselves for 99.9% of the journey anyway, the co-pilot can land if needs be ( if the pilot was so smashed as to allow the co-pilot to take over then he probably couldnt stand)

Police were tipped off when airport staff smelt alcohol on the veteran flier as he passed through routine security.

I see security nabbed another big terrorist - not. A quarter pint of beer is all it takes not to pass the breath test. The article says he was tested, but it does not provide the results - does that mean they can't release it or their afraid to tell the truth that he passed or was on the borderline?

I'm more worried about bad weather or poor maintenance than a pilot that isn't 100% due to his activities the day before.

Fact is pilots are there to monitor the the monitors, although in the case of an emergency having a pilot at 100% would certainly be better than one who hasn't recovered from the previous evening.
