Hang on...

How are people only now waking up to this?

I've been using Firefox for over four years now, IE was always full of security flaws.

This is nothing new, but only now they've started to publicly recognize the problems?

What are you talking about Opera has been free for over a year. Check out the site www.opera.com... once in a while it is totally free.

No it isn't. It's free to download, but not Free Software. If it were Free then you'd be allowed to decompile/reverse engineer/see the source code. But you can't.

All intellectual property rights such as but not limited to patents, trademarks, copyrights or trade secret rights related to the Software are the property of and remains vested in Opera Software ASA/its suppliers.

You shall not modify, translate, reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the Software or any part thereof or otherwise attempt to derive source code, create or use derivative works therefrom.

Not Free Software. Firefox is, mostly (custom builds can't use the word Firefox or use the Fox part of the logo but other than that it is Free).
