For home defense, have you considered a 12guage pump?
Good ones are as reliable as can be. A wide assortment of loads avail from birdshot to mag slugs and buck shot. Will stop anyone with the right load. Don't have to as accurate as with a pistol / rifle / sub. Buying one doesn't have to break the bank.
Also, the sound of a shell being chambered in one and the effect of having the business end pointed at you... it has been reported that alone has been enough to send bad guys running at times without even pulling the trigger.
I know both Remmington and Mossberg make good versions.

If you want to stay in 9mm, look closely at the Springfield XD. Well made, great safety features and easy to use and maintain. Just point and shoot. Intuitive grip position/angle. Equip it with Heinie Straight Eight sights and you are ready to go. Plus the hi cap mags hold 16 rounds. Thats alot of lead.
I have well over 1500 range rounds through mine and I love it. I am contemplating some aftermarket tweaks to the recoil spring set up. Very easy to do.
