Utah has a long history of people who have broken off from the mainstream Mormon church. There are a lot of self proclaimed prophets around who have Mormon upbringing. They all believe in modern day prophecy, and the topic of the end of days or "the latter days" or "the U.S. Constitution will be hanging by a thread" is common, even in the mainstream church.

For a fascinating read on this, I recommend "Under The Banner of Heaven" by John Krakauer. The Parowan Prophet is not mentioned in this book, but it will provide some good insight into the world of polygamist prophets in Utah.
